Monterey boys basketball

Behind Stephen Dorsey and Maryland transfer Brandon Hanson, the Toreadores defeat Alisal 65-43.

Monterey boys basketball

Monterey holding a 42-27 lead over Alisal at the half.

Stevenson girls soccer

Four days after competing in the State Cross Country championships, Anna Wilcoxon went out and scored two goals in the Pirates season opening win over Monterey.

Carmel-Palma comebacks

How do both teams handle adversity?
 Carmel
Has trailed in the first quarter three times this year, including two of its last three games.
Against Pacific Grove, Carmel responded by running off 63 unanswered points -- with a running clock in the second half.
Against Monte Vista last week, it took 3:12 to tie the game. After Monte Vista tied the game at 21, Carmel outscored them 31-7 during a 16 minute stretch.
And against Salinas, the Padres ran off 17 straight points after trailing 7-0.
Palma
Overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit to St. Joseph by rallying for 14 second half points.
Starring at a 14-7 deficit to Salinas in the second quarter, the Chieftains ran off 32 straight points.
Palma erupted for 42 unanswered points after spotting Alvarez a 6-0 lead.
And in their loss to San Benito, the Chieftains actually held a 6-0 and 12-7 lead in a 13-12 setback.

Top 10 football

1. Carmel: Only unbeaten team left in the CCS.
1. Palma: Chasing an 11th CCS title.
3. San Benito: Over 30 players will be back next year.
4. Christopher: Grabbed a share of the MBL title in just its second year.
5. Salinas: Getting out of the Division I semifinals is an obstacle.
6. Monte Vista: A record setting year for the MBL tri-champion Mustangs.
7. Monterey: Season over.
8. Alisal: Season over.
9. North County: Season over.
10. Soledad: Season over.

What to watch

Boys basketball

Monterey, with 6-foot-6 center Stephen Dorsey, will visit Alisal tonight at 7 p.m.

Chat time

Tonight at 7 p.m. on The Herald's web site, four coaches are going to help me break down Saturday's CCS Division IV title game between Palma and Carmel.
Anyone can join in and ask a question to the coaches or provide their own opinion.

Palma-Carmel football

So, if Carmel wins, that's because Palma is down.
But if Palma wins, well, it was suppose to because it's Carmel.
Hey, this is what you guys are emailing me.
Isn't it possible that just maybe we have two talented football teams in this county?
And that this indeed will be a game for the ages?

Carmel football

What I like about Carmel's attitude is the excitement it has in preparing to face Palma on Saturday in the CCS Division IV title game at 7 p.m. at MPC.
I really believe Palma is in most school's heads around here before they step on the field. Carmel seems oblivious to who the opponent is.
I like the confidence Carmel shows on the field, not off. It reminds me of Palma.

Palma-Carmel basketball

Now what?
With the Carmel-Palma kickoff pushed back to 7 p.m. on Saturday, should the Carmel-Palma basketball game, slated to tip off at the same time, be moved up to say 1 p.m.?

Smart move by MPC

Wise move by MPC administration to allow the CCS Division IV title game to be held on their campus.
This is one of the nicest football facilities in the state. Now you're going to have close to 4,000 people getting a first hand view.
If it lures one or two kids to your team next year, it was worth it.

11/29/2011

Notre Dame basketball

Returning to the coaching ranks after retiring five years ago at Notre Dame, John Given got off on the right foot after a 57-14 season opening win over Pacific Grove.
The Spirits have had just one winning season since Given left in 2006.

Alvarez-PG boys basketball

The Eagles open the season with 47-35 win over Pacific Grove.

King City-Seaside girls hoops

King City opens its season with a 52-37 win over Seaside. Two-time All-County guard Victoria Dorn tweaked her knee in the first half and did not return for Seaside.

Alv-PG boys basketball

Alvarez holding a 39-26 lead over Pacific Grove heading into the final quarter.

PG-Alv basketball

The Eagles hold a slim 19-18 halftime lead in both teams season opener.

Hartnell men's soccer

State Final Four
Hartnell vs. Santa Barbara, 2 p.m. at Cosumnes River College, Sacramento
The Panthers (18-2-3), who are ranked No. 2 in the state, have the top two scorers in the state in Max Estrada and Ivan Campos, who have combined for 53 goals and 16 assists.
By comparison, Santa Barbara (18-1-4) has 54 goals as a team.
Santa Barbara, which is ranked No. 9 in the state, has allowed just 18 goals all year. The Panthers have given up 20.

Pal-Car football time change

Saturday's Central Coast Section Division IV title game has been moved to Monterey Peninsula College, where Palma and Carmel will kickoff at 7 p.m.

North County basketball

When the Condors host North Salinas tonight in their season opener, staring at them is a 26-game losing streak that dates back to 2010.
North County became the first team in the programs 33 year history to go winless last season. The last time a team went winless in a season was Monte Vista in 2007 - who lost 24 straight over two seasons.

Palma's offense

I think Palma is going to go right at Carmel's front four and attempt to establish time consuming drives to keep Devin Pearson off the field.
The Padres defense has prided themselves on creating turnovers or getting stops in the red zone. But if Palma goes on five and six minute drives, the Padres offense will be limited.
Jack Meyers runs as well as anyone between the tackles. And Marcus Washington provides quickness to the outside. If Washington gets into open space, he's gone.
I also expect to see the Chieftains throw the ball deep on occasion to 6-foot-6 Noah Allen or hit 6-5 tight end Cameron Neff on crossing patterns.
This offense is more balanced than people think.

Carmel offense

That potent Padre passing attack that saw Devin Pearson tear up opponents for over 5,500 yards over the previous two years hasn't been as prominent this fall.
 And for good reason.
Carmel has grinded out nearly 3,000 rushing yards behind that same quarterback, who has chalked up nearly 400 rushing yards in two postseason games by himself.
In other words, the Padres haven't had to throw the ball as frequently.
Could we see that passing attack unleashed on Saturday?
I think Carmel has to put the ball in the air. It will not rush for 400 yards against Palma's defense.
Carmel can move the ball through the air if the offensive line provides pass protection. Look for Pearson to chalk up most of his rushing yards on scrambles.

Carmel-Palma football

Carmel is 35-2 over the last three years with both losses coming from teams outside of Monterey County.
Palma is 28-4-2 with all four losses coming from teams outside Monterey County.
Under head coach Golden Anderson, the Padres have never lost a game in Monterey County. During that same span, Palma is 22-2-2. Again, both losses coming from teams outside the county.

Palma football

How many teams lose their starting quarterback on the first drive of their third game and still go 10-1-1 and reach the CCS title game?
Obviously it says something about the depth at Palma.
And the job junior Jack Tardieu did in coming in and managing the offense, leading Palma to seven straight wins.
Don't misread Palma as just a running machine. Tight end Cameron Neff has 23 catches and Noah Allen is averaging 17 yards a catch.

What to watch

Boys basketball
Defending TCAL champion Salinas will open its season tonight, hosting Aptos at 7 p.m. A win moves head coach Joe Chappell to within one win of tying the CCS record for wins as a coach.

College Player of the Week

Max Estrada, Hartnell men's soccer: Produced two goals to increase his state leading total to 31, catapulting the Panthers into the State Final Four.
Honorable mention: Monae Sanford, MPC women's basketball; Ivan Campos, Hartnell men's soccer; Erika Ward, CSUMB women's basketball; Derrick Anderson, CSUMB men's basketball; Daryl Thomas, Hartnell men's basketball.

11/28/2011

Brett Favre to the Texans? Don't laugh. Houston lost its first two qb's for the season. Jeff Garcia got a tryout.

Hartnell men's soccer

The Panthers, ranked No. 7 in the nation, will face Santa Barbara City College on Friday at 2 p.m. in the State Final Four at Cosumnes River in Sacramento.
This is Hartnell's (18-2-3) first trip to the Final Four since 2004.
Santa Barbara posted an 18-1-2 record, beating Golden West on Saturday. It is unbeaten in its last 17 games (16-0-1).
Mt. San Antonio (20-0-3) will face City College of San Francisco (19-4-1) in the other Final Four battle.

Carmel football

If I had one concern for Carmel heading into Saturday's CCS Division IV title game with Palma, it's can it contain the Chieftains ground game.
In three non-league games, the Padres gave up 868 rushing yards to three teams that predominately run the football, including 341 to Salinas.
The Cowboys Raymond Cerda ran for 259 yards on his own back on Sept. 24.
I bring his name up because Cerda reminds me a little of Palma's Jack Meyers -- a strong inside the tackles runner with a burst in the open field.
Palma has rushed for nearly 3,000 yards this year.
Carmel's first two playoff opponents were passing offenses that averaged 3.3 yards running the ball.

Palma-Carmel defense

We know about Palma's vaunted defense, led by Jack Powers, Devin Morales and Hidelv Manzur.
But what about the Padres cast of unknowns anchored by Jacob Shyvers, Zack Schneider and Zach Markow.
 Here are some interesting comparisons.
Palma has allowed just 36 points in the first quarter and 85 points in the first half.
Carmel has held opponents to 42 points in the first quarter and 83 points in the first half.
Both held North Salinas scoreless in the first quarter and Salinas to seven points in the opening 12 minutes.

Palma-Carmel coaches

Through Jeff Carnazzo's first three years as head coach at Palma, the Chieftains won 32 games. Carmel coach Golden Anderson has won 35 games in his first three seasons.
Carnazzo won his first six playoff games and two CCS titles before suffering a postseason loss in year three. Anderson is 7-1 in the playoffs and in his third straight CCS finals game.

Preps of the Week

Boys
Sam Hales, King City cross country: Finished 10th at the State Division IV finals to reach the podium for the Mustangs.
Honorable mention: Jack Meyers, Palma football;  Randy Sosa, Greenfield cross country; Devin Pearson, Carmel football; Devin Morales, Palma football; Holden Smith, Carmel football.

Girls
Anna Welsh, Monterey cross country: The senior distance ace finished ninth overall at the State Division III finals, the highest finisher of any local runner.
Honorable mention: Michelle Watkins, Pacific Grove cross country; Anna Wilcoxon, Stevenson cross country; Camille Herhusky, Carmel cross country.

Carmel-Palma time change

There is talk of moving Saturday's CCS Division IV title game between Palma and Carmel to a 3 p.m. kickoff because several players on both teams are scheduled to take the SAT test Saturday morning.
How about moving the game to Friday under the lights?

Joe Chappell

Sitting at 666 career wins, the Salinas boys basketball coach can move to within one win of tying the Central Coast Section career win record on Tuesday when the Cowboys open the season, hosting Aptos.
If the Cowboys win, Chappell can tie the CCS boys mark on Dec. 5 when Salinas hosts Soledad. He would likely break the record at the Santa Cruz Dads' Tournament.

Even Dietrich-Smith

When Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was ejected for kicking an opponent on Thanksgiving, the lineman he delivered a cheap shot to was Salinas High product Evan Dietrich-Smith.

11/27/2011

Palma-Carmel basketball

The two teams are slated to meet on Dec. 3.
You might want to consider moving your game up a day to avoid playing in an empty gym.
You might have heard about this other event going on that day involving your football teams -- and half your basketball rosters.

Carmel-Palma common opponents

There are three common opponents this year in North Salinas, Salinas and Soledad.
The Chieftains prevailed over North Salinas 55-7, Salinas 37-21 and Soledad 35-0.
Carmel beat North Salinas 56-20, Salinas 32-14 and Soledad 58-20.
A note of interest: Palma and Carmel both trailed against Salinas.

Raiders

With no Jay Culter, look for the Bears to attack the Raiders defensive front with running back Matt Forte.
Oakland is ranked near the bottom in rushing defense. A bigger concern is the amount of penalties the Raiders continue to commit.
With no Darren McFadden, the Raiders will give Carson Palmer more freedom to throw the ball down field.
Don't punt the ball to Devin Hester.
With all the uncertainly in the AFC West, the Raiders have a chance to spread themselves from the rest of the pack.

Hartnell fall sports

What a fall for the Panthers.
The football program won a share of the Coast Conference title and a bowl game.
The men's cross country team captured the conference team title with the women finishing second.
The nationally ranked men's soccer team won a conference title and is headed to the State Final Four at 18-2-3.
The volleyball team finished second in the conference.
And the men's basketball team is off to a 5-0 start.

Palma-Carmel playoff records

The Chieftains rich playoff history began with a 2-7 start. Since then Palma is 37-11-1 with 10 titles.
Carmel dropped its first seven playoff games. Since then it's 5-1 with one section title.
The 39 overall wins by the Chieftains is the third most in CCS history, behind Los Gatos' 52, Bellarmine's 47 and Oak Grove's 46.

Car-Pal time change?

Biggest battles

When Carmel and Palma meet on Dec. 3 for the Division IV title, it will not be the first time two county teams have met for a football championship.
Five years ago Seaside and Pacific Grove battled for a Division IV title, where the Spartans posted a 28-14 win.
But the one title bout that lived up to its billing came in 1989 when Palma and North County both went into the CCS Division II South Zone title game undefeated.
It remained that way after a Brian Maestri interception of a Todd Whitehurst pass ended the game in a 14-14 tie and a co-CCS title.

John Bonano

The Palma High product has been nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding player that began his collegiate football career as a walk on.
A red shirt junior kicker at the University of Arizona, Bonano took over the place kicking duties midway through the season to go along with his kickoff duties.
Bonano is 7-of-10 in field goals and 18-of-18 in extra points this year. He is tied for 10th in the nation in touchbacks with 21. He was awarded a scholarship this fall.

11/26/2011

State cross country

Anna Welsh of Monterey finishes ninth at the State Division III girls finals while King City's Sam Hales takes 10th in the boys division IV finals to both make the podium.
HARTNELL SOCCER

Panthers headed to State Final 4, using two goals from Max Estrada in 4 1 win over American River.

HARTNELL SOCCER

Panthers up 3 0 at half over American River in Northern California finals.

CSUMB women's basketball team falls from unbeaten ranks, dropping 68 63 decision to Simon Fraser of Canada.
CSUMB women's basketball team down by a point at halftime.

Did you know

That Carmel coach Golden Anderson was a freshman quarterback at Palma before transferring back to Carmel for his sophomore season?

Rooting interests

So who do you -- the fan --  root for?
Most of you are tired of Palma beating up on county teams for the last 28 years.
And a lot of you think Carmel runs up the score.

Carmel football

With 655 points, the Padres broke their own county record for points through 12 games. Carmel is the second team in California to put together three straight 600 point seasons.
All three are among the top 50 point totals in California history.

Palma football

So it hasn't been too entertaining watching Palma roll over two Division IV opponents in the playoffs.
What did you expect?
This is an 'A' league team playing 'C' league playoff opponents.
Will it change on Dec. 3 when the Chieftains face Carmel at Pacific Grove in the Division IV finals?

What to watch

Men's Soccer
Nationally ranked Hartnell can earn a trip to the state championships with a win today at 2 p.m. in the Northern California championships at Hartnell.

Cross Country
The high school state championships begin today at 8:55 a.m. at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Palma supremacy

The last Mission Trail Athletic League team to beat Palma was Pacific Grove in 1988 when a missed two-point conversation enabled the Breakers to prevail at old Salinas Municipal Stadium.
The two teams ended up sharing the MTAL title.
A member of that Breakers squad was former Colts offensive lineman Eric Mahlum.

Salinas football

The Cowboys season ending 49-14 loss to Menlo-Atherton in the CCS Division I semifinals was similar to their season opening 35-14 setback to Atascadero.
Before Salinas knew what hit them, it was staring at a 30-plus point deficit. Atascadero scored the games first 31 points. Menlo-Atherton was up 35-0 before halftime.
Than again, did anyone think Salinas would even be in the semifinals a fourth straight year after dropping three straight games earlier this year?
Taking the next step has become a hurdle for the Cowboys. But who wouldn't trade places with them to be in that position?

Palma-Carmel

Get ready for a week of non stop hype.
The highest scoring offense against the county's best defense.
Do we really have to wait eight days before these teams play on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Pacific Grove?

11/25/2011

SALINAS FOOTBALL

Cowboys in trouble in Division I semifinals, trailing 28 0 with 6:00 left in the second quarter.

SALINAS FOOTBALL

Menlo Atherton opens up a 21 0 lead with 9:32 left in first half over Salinas in Division I semifinal.

Prep girls hoops

A few players to watch this winter

Sarah Anderson, Carmel: Led the entire tri-league area in 3-point goals (71).
Victoria Dorn, Seaside: A two-time member of The Herald's All-County team.
Sarah Sheppard, King City: Averaged over 15 points and 13 rebounds a game.
Sara Makanani, North Salinas: The teams returning leading scorer.
Priscilla Mora, North County: Averaged a double-double in 26 of 28 games last year.
Kiera Paulo, Notre Dame: One of the fastest players in the county.
Felicia Villarruel, Soledad: Led a resurgent Aztec squad back to respectability last year.
Eva Latu, Alisal: Will be asked to carry the offense this season.
Annie Aldrete, Santa Catalina: A three-year starter for the Cougars.

SALINAS FOOTBALL

Cowboys down 14 0 with 7:32 left in the first quarter to Menlo Atherton in CCS Division I semifinals.

Girls state cross country

A rundown of the four individuals from Monterey County headed to the state cross country divisional girls championships on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Anna Welsh, Monterey: Having run the 70th fastest time ever of any division at Crystal Springs in Belmont two weeks ago, Welsh hopes a third straight trip to the state meet is a charm.
Division IV
Michelle Watkins, Pacific Grove: Taking up the sport this year as a freshman, the distance ace was the top local finisher at the CCS Division IV finals.
Camielle Herhusky, Carmel: The MTAL champion, Herhusky is capping a memorable senior year with her first trip to the state meet.
Anna Wilcoxon, Stevenson: The third member from the MTAL to reach the state meet, Wilcoxon ran her best race of the season at the CCS finals.

Boys state cross country

A rundown of the three individuals and two teams headed to Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday to compete in the state cross country divisional boys championships.

Division I
Francisco Salvador, Alisal: This is the seniors second trip to the state championships.
Division IV
Sam Hales, King City: The distance ace is headed to the state finals for the third straight year, having defended his MTAL title earlier this year.
Randy Sosa, Greenfield: Having dropped more than two minutes off his time from last season, Sosa extended his year into Thanksgiving Weekend.
Teams
Carmel is sending its boys team in Division IV while York is making its seventh Division V state meet appearance in the last eight years.

Salinas-MA football

Menlo-Atherton is 7-0 when it scores first, 1-3 when it doesn't. Two of its losses this year have come at home. It is 4-3 against teams in the playoffs this year.
The Bears are 7-1 over their last eight games. But they have not been involved in a game decided by 13 points or more this year.
Then again, neither had Salinas until last week's 27-26 win over Homestead, its fifth straight road win.
A concern for the Cowboys is their run defense, which has given up over 2,000 yards on the ground this year, including 275 last week.

Palma-SHP football

The Gators are clearly battle tested this season, having been involved in three games decided by three points or less, going 3-0 in all three.
In addition, Sacred Heart showed a little of the magic it possessed during last year's CCS title run last week, rallying for 13 points in the fourth quarter in a come-from-behind win over Scotts Valley.
Quarterback Jack Larson seems to be at his best against playoff caliber opponents. Eight of his scoring tosses this year -- three last week -- have come against teams in the postseason.

Things I'd like to see

I'd like to see Salinas do a double flea-flicker to open the game.

I'd like to see Jack Meyers break the Palma single-season rushing record.

I'd like to see a turnover free game between Carmel and Monte Vista.

I'd like to stop hearing about a potential Carmel-Palma showdown.

I'd like to see Salinas reach the CCS Division I finals.

I'd like to see leagues not involved in the equity league decisions, not be allowed to vote.

Carmel-MVC football

If there were two films I would have watched of Monte Vista this past week, it would have been of its games against Monterey and Christopher.
In both games, the Mustangs gave up over 400 yards in total offense. The difference is Monte Vista still beat Christopher, who is similar to Carmel with its balanced attack.
One number of interest is the first quarter where Carmel has scored 198 points while the Mustangs have allowed just six.

Friday's picks

No rhyme or reason, but a 5-0 start to the postseason improved the overall mark to 86-19.

Sacred Heart Prep at Palma: As much as I agreed with the decision for Palma to opt down, it's still hard to see them in Division IV. I know Sacred Heart Prep is the defending Division IV champions. But it can't stop Palma's ground game and it will not be able to move the ball. Pick: Palma.

Monte Vista at Carmel: If the Padres let Monte Vista go up and down the field like Menlo did last week, it will cost them. Monte Vista doesn't turn the ball over. Seven players start on both sides of the ball for the Mustangs. Only one goes both ways for Carmel. Pick: Carmel.
Salinas at Menlo-Atherton: You've got a power back to run between the tackles. A slasher to get to the outside. And a tight end with size and good hands. Salinas hasn't won five straight road games by mistake. Special teams extended their season last week. Defense dictates the tempo today. Pick: Salinas.

11/24/2011

All-league debate

I've never understood the voting process at all-league meetings?
How does a kid with 21 touchdowns in seven league games not originally voted onto the first team?
Did you penalize him because he's a sophomore, or because he didn't play in more than a couple of series' in three league games because they were blowouts?
Because if that's the criteria, coaches may tend to leave players in longer to pad stats.

Gonzales highlight

Noe Vasquez's 1,199 rushing yards marked the first time in eight years that a Gonzales running back went over 1,000 rushing yards, when Steven Estrada piled up nearly 1,600 in 2003.

Prep boys hoops

A few names to watch for this year in basketball

Noah Allen, Palma: A 6-foot-5 playmaker with shooting skills.
Stephen Dorsey, Monterey: A double-double machine last winter.
Arthur Caldwell, Salinas: Will not be overshadowed this year.
Devin Pearson, Carmel: The best defensive guard in the MTAL.
Ricardo Esparza-Ponce, Marina: Knocked down a county best 91 3-point goals last year.
Tucker Forbes, Stevenson: The 6-foot-8 senior will be a force in the paint this fall.
Luke Lowell, Pacific Grove: Saw extensive action last year as a freshman.
Jack Powers, Palma: A beast in the paint on defense for the Chieftains.

Top 10 football

1. Carmel: Only team in CCS with 11 wins.
2. Palma: Headed for a showdown with the Padres?
3. San Benito: Did the emotion of playing Palma a week earlier take its toll.
4. Christopher: Has put up 118 points in its last two games.
5. Salinas: Has won five straight road games.
6. Monte Vista: One of five teams in the CCS with 10 or more wins.
7. Monterey: A second half collapse last week.
8. Alisal: Will benefit from the equity league move next fall.
9. North County: Missed the postseason for the first time in three years.
10. Soledad: Best coaching job this year.

49ers

You will be witnessing the passing of the torch in terms of defense tonight.
Baltimore has held that honor for a decade. And while an aging core is still among the best, the 49ers have put together a defense that could dominate for the next decade.
This defense is fast, physical and flies to the ball. And it has not allowed a rushing touchdown this year.
A 49ers win clinches no worse than a share of the Western Division title.

Soledad football

If you didn't already realize the job first year head coach Frankie Berlanga did at Soledad this fall, check this out.
Just three players were named to the all-league first team. By comparison, King City had seven. Yet, it was Soledad in the playoffs for the first time in school history.

CSUMB women's basketball

How does a program that returns the core of its squad from last seasons NCAA Division II Tournament team feel about not getting a national pre-season ranking?
It goes out and starts the season 2-0 after a 70-67 win over Colorado State-Pueblo Wednesday in the Otter Thanksgiving Classic -- setting a pair of single-game records in the process.
Erika Ward has covered nicely from a torn ACL last year, breaking the school record with six 3-point goals last night. And Kris King had six of the teams school record 15 steals.
Former Santa Catalina standout Taylor Fox produced two points off the bench for Colorado State-Pueblo, who will face Simon Fraser on Friday at CSUMB.

Coach on the move

There's a good chance that at least one head coaching vacancy for football in the county will open up.

11/23/2011

Palma football

The 1,241 rushing yards Jack Meyers has compiled this fall is the second highest total at Palma in the last 13 years, behind only Jack Baird's 1,395 yards last season.
After compiling just two 100-plus yard rushing efforts through the teams first eight games, Meyers has three straight, including 193 on just 10 carries last week.
His 19 rushing touchdowns are the most at Palma since the turn of the millennium.

Equity noise

The equity leagues have already been resolved for volleyball and cross country next fall.
Yet, there doesn't seem to be any issues about those changes.
At least no one has inquired about them.
I don't know of one football coach — well maybe one — that wanted this equity league.

Palma defense

The Chieftains have allowed a tri-league area low 121 points through 11 games, their lowest total since giving up 120 during their CCS Division I title run in 2002.
But the lowest point total ever allowed in the county over a 13 game season was Seaside in 2006, when it gave up just 98 points during its first CCS title.
A member of that Seaside defense is current Tampa Bay rookie linebacker Mason Foster.

Salinas-Menlo-Atherton football

I want to see Salinas use the pop pass to tight end Jose Ontiveros on occasion, if for no other reason than to keep Menlo-Atherton from putting nine in the box all day.
The Cowboys aren't going to win a game throwing the ball 15 times. It is not in their DNA. But it has to be creative in the postseason. You need a big play or two at this level.
Salinas has big play potential. Utilize it on occasion to open up that powerful ground game, which can wear opponents down.

Carmel-MVC football

What the Mustangs don't want to do is get into a shootout with a team averaging 53 plus points a game this year.
Erase the 48 points it gave up to Monterey three weeks ago and Monte Vista has allowed 7.9 points a game this year, holding high scoring Christopher to 18 points.
My concern for Monte Vista is can it stop the Padres running game, which has two 1,000 yard rushers in Devin Pearson and Holden Smith, who have 46 touchdowns between them?
We think of Carmel as a passing machine. Yet, it's been the ground game that has torched teams. Monte Vista did give up 401 yards rushing in that loss to Monterey.

Xavier Nady

It appears that Xavier Nady could be playing for his seventh major league team next year after he became a free agent following one season with the Diamondbacks.
The Salinas High product missed the final two months of the season with a broken hand.
Nady, who has played for the Padres, Mets, Pirates, Yankees, Cubs and Diamondbacks, is more suited for the American League as a designated hitter after two Tommy John surgeries on his throwing shoulder.
Nady, 32, hit well in a half-season with the Yankees in 2008.
I still think the Twins would be a good fit. If he wants to remain on the West Coast, the Mariners and A's need offensive help.

CSUMB men's basketball

Thanks to a 16-0 run, the Otters are in the win column for the first time this year after a 82-74 win over Cal-Maritime.
The timing couldn't be better for the Otters, who open CCAA play on Dec. 2. It is the hope that Alisal alum Oliver Caballero will be cleared by the NCAA to resume his collegiate career as well.
Derrick Anderson and J.J. Campbell combined for 32 points for CSUMB.

Scholarship bound

Carmel's Kraig McLeod has signed a letter-of-intent to attend the University of Colorado on a golf scholarship.

11/22/2011

Bowl bids

According to Cal-Hi Sports, Marin Catholic (11-0) has moved in front of Cardinal Newman (10-0-1) for the Division III bowl bid from the north.
The two North Coast Section powers are on a collision course to meet in the Division III finals.
Escalon sits at No. 3 at 12-0 with Palma No. 4 at 9-1-1. Carmel is No. 7 at 11-0. Six teams in the top 10 in Division III are undefeated.

Taylor Fox

The former Santa Catalina basketball standout and Herald Female Athlete of the Year in 2010 will be on the court for Colorado State University Pueblo when it visits CSU-Monterey Bay on Wednesday.
Fox, who averaged nearly 25 points a game as a senior at Santa Catalina, will spend the weekend on the coast as CSUP will face Simon Fraser on Friday at CSUMB.

State cross country

Will Shearer is making his fourth straight Division V state meet appearance as a member of the York School cross country team.
Monterey's Anna Welsh is headed to the Division III state girls finals for the third straight year. This year she is ranked in the top 10.
And distance ace Francisco Salvador of Alisal is going back to the Division I state meet for the second time in three years.

Food for thought

Carmel and Palma are slated to meet on the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 3.
One problem.
Will both teams have enough bodies to play the game if the football teams end up squaring off that same day in the CCS Division IV title game?
Both teams have at least three starters playing football.

MVC-Carmel football

What Monterey did so effectively in shutting down Monte Vista quarterback Taylor Cohan was collapse the pocket with a package of blitzes, forcing him out of his comfort zone.
Two of his four interceptions on the season came in that game. It was the Mustangs' only setback of the season.
You can bet Carmel has watched tape of this game more than any other. Or at least it should have.
Cohan can pick apart a defense if given time to throw. He doesn't need a lot of time. But he can't have a guy in his face the moment he gets the snap.
Cohan has a lot of targets to get the ball to. If there is pressure, look for a lot of dump-offs to the running backs.

Palma football

While dropping down to Division IV for the CCS playoffs immediately moved Palma to No. 5 in Northern California in their division, it will be virtually impossible for them to leap frog over the four teams in front of them.
Cardinal Newman, Marin Catholic, Escalon and Colfax are all undefeated in Northern California.
A suggestion for Palma next fall.
Dump St. Francis and St. Joseph and try and add a Marin Catholic or Colfax to your non-league schedule.
Remember next year there is a Northern California regional game after the section finals to decide the representatives for each division out of the north.
Wins over big programs in your division in the preseason will go along ways towards earning that regional berth, even if there is a league loss in the regular season.

Salinas-Menlo-Atherton football

The number that sticks out with Menlo-Atherton is average yards per carry.
Taylor Mashack is averaging 9.7 yards on 86 carries while Cameron Moody is averaging 7.7 yards on 100 carries for the Bears. As a team, they are averaging 7.2 yards each time someone runs the ball.

Monterey football and equity

Someone sent me an email asking if I remember the days when Monterey couldn't win a game for three years.
Suggesting Monterey is headed back to those days after being forced into the MBL's 'A' division next fall is a bit extreme.
The Toreadores will be competitive next year with a core of this year's title team coming back. A bigger question is whether they can hold up with a lack of depth -- 25 players finished this season.
And what does the future hold for the program, whose school enrollment is not going to grow?

Equity league

North County had no business being pushed into the Monterey Bay League's 'A' division in the first place.
Moving them back into the 'B' division on Monday was the right move.
Of course, Alvarez is not happy being thrown back into the 'A' division. And I can understand. It has never had a winning season in six years in the TCAL.
To take it a step further, North County has beaten the Eagles the last two years in non-league battles.
But there is a tremendous upside to Alvarez. It has one of the best running backs in the area. He just had to play quarterback this fall. And the freshmen did not lose a game this year.

What to watch

Boys basketball
The Tri-County Athletic League boys jamboree will tip off today at 4 p.m. at Alvarez.

Men's basketball
CSUMB will host Cal-Maritime tonight at 7 p.m.

11/21/2011

Equity League changes

The athletic directors had a change of heart during Monday's equity meeting.
Instead of North County being bumped into the Monterey Bay League's 'A' division, it will be Alvarez returning to the 'A' division.
All that awaits now is a Board of Managers vote of Dec. 6.
The 'A' division will look like this: Palma, San Benito, Salinas, Gilroy, Christopher, Alvarez, Monterey.
The 'B' division will consist of Seaside, North County, Alisal, North Salinas, Watsonville, Pajaro Valley and Monte Vista.

Equity league

Maybe I'm off on this. But reading between the lines, don't be surprised if there are changes at today's equity league meeting with athletic directors from what the coaches voted on last week.
This has been a hot debate. I can tell you six of the seven schools in the MBL wanted no part of moving into the higher league next year.

Carmel-MVC football

Are Carmel's four- and five-receiver formations nothing more than a decoy this year?
You can't still be waiting for Carmel to unleash its wide-open passing attack 12 weeks into the season.
This has become a run-first offense that has chalked up nearly 3,000 rushing yards.
What the four-receiver formations do, though, is pull defenders out of the box. With that offensive line, you can create matchup problems when you have five defenders out of the picture.

Carmel-MVC football

Erase a two-interception outing against Monterey, and Monte Vista quarterback Taylor Cohan has been nearly flawless.
The 6-foot-3, 201 pound senior has thrown for nearly 2,000 yards and 27 touchdown passes this year, with just four interceptions — two against Monterey — in 230 attempts.
Last week in his first ever playoff game, Cohan was 23-of-27 for 284 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-11 win over Half Moon Bay.

Palma-Sacred Heart Prep football

The defending CCS Division IV champions are as balanced as any team Palma has faced this year, having thrown for 16 touchdowns and rushed for 17 touchdowns.
Paul Bruini has caught 47 passes for the Gators, averaging just under 18 yards a catch. Sacred Heart's only road loss of the season was the Menlo-Atherton.

Diego Estrada an All-American

The former Alisal High distance ace is an All-American again after finishing seventh overall at the NCAA National cross country championships in Indiana, covering 8K in 29:24.

Salinas-Menlo Atherton

Eight of the Bears 11 games this fall have come against teams in the playoffs, including last week's 40-22 win over Santa Clara. Six times they have scored 35 or more points.
The Cowboys have won five straight games and their last five road games. This is Salinas' fourth straight trip to the CCS Division I semifinals -- the only team in the county with that distinction.

College Player of the Week

Austen Fales, Hartnell football: The sophomore tossed a career high five touchdown passes, and was on the receiving end of a touchdown pass in the Panthers bowl win over Solano.
Honorable mention: Miguel Gallegos, Hartnell men's cross country; Erika Ward, CSUMB women's basketball; Zaira Guzman, Hartnell women's cross country; Alvin Jelks, Hartnell football; Jovahn Lualemana, Monterey Peninsula football.

Preps of the Week

Boys
Kyle Salao, Salinas football: The return specialist took back a kickoff 80 yards for the game-winning touchdown in the Cowboys first round playoff win at Homestead.
Honorable mention: Devin Pearson, Carmel football; Jack Meyers, Palma football; Antonio Velasco, Soledad football; Jimmy Hill, Monterey football; Raymond Cerda, Salinas football.
Girls
Alex Barbeau, Salinas volleyball: Compiled 11 kills, 12 digs and four blocks before being injured in the final game of the Cowboys season.
Honorable mention: Chloe Corriveau, Santa Catalina golf; McKenzie Palassou, Salinas volleyball; Jada Evers, Monterey tennis; Kaylan Griffith, Carmel tennis; Joy Johnson, Salinas tennis.

What to watch

The Central Coast Section Singles and Doubles tournament begins today at Courtside Club in Los Gatos.

11/20/2011

Private dominance

All seven West Catholic Athletic League schools that received a playoff spot among three divisions are still alive in the postseason.
A perfect example of why several coaches are calling for a private school-public school playoff format.
On the other hand, of the 20 teams that remain among five divisions in the CCS, 10 are private and 10 are public.
Then again, public schools outnumber private schools 4-1 in the section.

Devin Pearson

Arguably the best quarterback to put on a uniform in Monterey County, Pearson also played most of last  Friday's playoff game against Menlo as a safety.
Perhaps an audition for college recruiters to consider?
When Pearson laid the wood on one opponent, the first person that came to mind was former Stanford safety John Lynch, who was a quarterback in high school.

Raiders

With Darren McFadden not expected to play today, this becomes quarterback Carson Palmer's team just  four weeks after joining the Raiders in a trade.
Palmer began paying dividends for his trade of at least one No. 1 pick with a sensational effort in last week's win over San Diego.
But a bigger concern for Oakland is its run defense. It's ranked near the bottom in the NFL. And the Vikings have arguably the best running back in the NFL in Adrian Petersen.

49ers

How can you not at least be a little concerned about today's battle with 3-6 Arizona.
One, it's a division rival.
Two, it's four days before the 49ers travel to Baltimore in the Thanksgiving Harbaugh Bowl.
Three, the Cardinals have won their last two games with a backup quarterback.
Granted, the 49ers have won their last four meetings against the Cardinals.
Still division rivalries always play out differently.

Equity meeting

Athletic directors for both the TCAL and MBL will meet on Monday at North County High to review the proposals made by football coaches for next year's MBL equity league.
The changes that were voted on at last Wednesday's equity meeting have not sat well with a handful of coaches.
More changes could be forthcoming in terms of who is moved into the MBL's 'A' division and who will be in the 'B' division.
The athletic directors are being urged to come to an agreement before the Board of Mangers meeting on Dec. 6.
I'm betting there will be at least one change from Wednesday's coaches vote.

Playoff update

Carmel and Monte Vista will meet on Friday at 7 p.m. at Pacific Grove High in the Division IV semifinals.
Palma will face Sacred Heart Prep on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Salinas Sports Complex in the Division IV semifinals.
Salinas will visit Menlo-Atherton on Friday at 1 p.m. in the Division I semifinals.

11/19/2011

HARTNELL FOOTBALL

Panthers capture Living Breath Foundation Bowl with 48 22 win over Solano.

HARTNELL FOOTBALL

Three touchdowns from Alvin Jelks has the Panthers up 41 22 going to the fourth quarter.

HARTNELL FOOTBALL

Panthers open up 21 13 halftime lead over Solano.

HARTNELL FOOTBALL

Panthers trail 13 7 to Solano in first quarter

Palma-Soledad football

 It wasn't an ideal matchup.
A team making its 28th straight playoff appearance against a program making its first.
The differences were evident in the opening minutes.
Yet, Soledad had a glimmer of hope when it intercepted a pass down just 14-0.
 What changed?
Touchdown runs of 83 and 64 yards by Jack Meyers just before halftime, doubling the Chieftains led.

Monterey football

Did the equity league meeting and its proposed changes earlier in the week become a distraction for Monterey?
It sure seemed like it during a lopsided loss to Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Monterey was one of two teams in the playoffs that was told it could be moving up into the MBL's 'A' division next fall.
Clearly it's not where the program wants to end up.
I don't see how it couldn't have had an effect on the players. It's all that's been talked about.
Then again Christopher had little trouble in posting a 51-0 win over Del Mar in its first ever playoff game.

Volleyball injuries

Alex Barbeau may have torn her ACL and MCL in her left knee in her final high school match for Salinas.
Former North Salinas High and CSU-Monterey Bay freshman Julia Ashen played all season with a sore knee.
Is year around volleyball too much? Or are these isolated incidents?
What other sport do athletes knees take as much abuse on a daily basis.

Salinas football

For the fourth straight year, the Cowboys are headed to the CCS Division I finals.
Salinas, who once stood at 2-4, has now won five straight games and is 5-0 in its last five road games.
More importantly, Salinas showed up in a big game, overcoming a 20-6 deficit to beat Homestead by a point.
For a team that some suggested was the worst in 15 years, the Cowboys are one win away from playing in the finals.

Carmel football

I don't know if Carmel looked shaky or just flat in the first quarter.
Or maybe it's just playing at Pacific Grove that rattles them.
For the second straight week, the Padres didn't show a lot of offensive fire in the first quarter.
Execution was an issue. I'm not sure the offense ever got in a real flow.
Three of the Padres touchdowns were on drives of three plays or less.
The difference in the game was turnovers. Menlo turned the ball over four times -- twice inside the 5-yard line. Carmel didn't turn the ball over once.

Projected finishes for 2012

If the realignment of the MBL's two divisions for football remain intact, and that's open for debate, here are the projected finishes for 2012.

A Division
1. Palma
2. San Benito
3. Christopher
4. Salinas
5. Monterey
6. North County
7. Gilroy

B Division
1. Seaside
2. Alisal
3. Alvarez
4. Monte Vista
5. North Salinas
6. Watsonville
7. Pajaro Valley

As for the MTAL
 1. Carmel
 2. Pacific Grove
 3. Soledad
 4. King City
 5. Greenfield
 6. Gonzales
 7. Stevenson
  8. Marina

WCAL playoffs

Lets see.
No. 8 seed St. Francis beat top seed Oak Grove in the Open Division.
Mitty steamrolled Tri-County Athletic League champion San Benito in the Open.
Sacred Heart Cathedral throttled Monterey Bay League tri-champion Monterey in Division III.
And St. Ignatius, who was 3-6-1, beat Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion Aptos in Division III.
All of them were lower seeded teams based on a point system.
That's a West Catholic Athletic League sweep.
And you wonder why teams in the WCAL choose not to opt up?
This is why there is a cry for changes in the CCS postseason.

CSUMB volleyball

Senior outside hitter Rheann Fall was selected to the Daktronics All-West Region second team for the Otters.
Fall leaves the CSUMB volleyball program as the career leader in kills (1,454), and career leader in aces (132).

Dave Coffin

Monterey County sports writer Dave Coffin passed away today after a battle with lung cancer.
Coffin was a reporter for The Herald for over 50 years, covering every sport imaginable. One of his last pieces was a story on the late Ben Omoto.
Dave, you will be missed.

Basketball clinic

Hey, if you need to get your kid out for a little exercise on Saturday, Seaside's Finest is conducting a basketball clinic for grades 3rd-6th from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 7th-12th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Seaside Boys and Girls club.

Updates

Look for updates on tonight's four local high school football games on the blog.

Joe Paterno

It's been a difficult month for former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who has been diagnosed with lung cancer.

Hartnell men's basketball

A combined 21 points from Alisal alum Jonathan Sosa and Monterey product Daryl Thomas propelled the Panthers to an 84-46 win over Simpson College's junior varsity.

Salinas-Homestead football

Pick your poison. Salinas has four running backs with over 500 rushing yards --  that could start for any team in the county.
Getting them all equal carries has proven impossible.
But Raymond Cerda has been the most durable, having rushed for over 1,000 yards.
He's also been reliable, scoring touchdowns in nine of the teams 10 games. Eight of his 15 touchdowns have come in the last three games
Cerda is a big back with deceptive speed -- outrunning the Carmel secondary for a touchdown in Week 3.
The amount of carries Cerda receives tonight could depend on how much he's used on defense.

What I'd like to see

I'd like to see Monterey mix that attack with a pass or two.

I'd like to see Salinas beat a team with a winning record to silence its critics.

I'd like to see Carmel's defense get a little respect.

I'd like to see Soledad come out of tonight's game with Palma with something to build off of.

I'd like to see a change in the playoff system.

Equity update

I have been told by league commissioner Tim McCarthy that before the Board of Managers vote on the proposed moves in football next fall, the athletic directors will have to approve it first.
One athletic director told me this decision is far from over.
My hunch is North County and Monterey will fight moving into the MBL's 'A' division and Seaside is not out of the woods yet.
And while three teams may ultimately not switch leagues, at least two will.

Hartnell football

College Bowls
Living Breath Foundation Bowl
Solano (7-3) vs. Hartnell (7-3) at Cabrillo College, 1 p.m.

Both teams come into the game having won four straight. Solano won the Bay Valley Conference while Hartnell gathered a share of the Coast Conference title. A common opponent is Monterey Peninsula, who Hartnell beat 36-24 last week while Solano was beaten 38-28 in Week 4. Alvin Jelks has rushed for over 1,400 yards and scored 18 touchdowns for Hartnell. Quarterback Austen Fales hit eight different receivers last week, tossing four touchdown passes. Hartnell has 38 sacks as a team, 10 1/2 from Juan Pacheco. Solano has outscored opponents 109-10 in the third quarter. It has outscored its last two opponents 77-14. Three quarterbacks have thrown for over 1,800 yards and 17 touchdowns.

MPC football

Sierra Credit Union Bowl
Monterey Peninsula (7-3) vs. Yuba (6-4) at Yuba College, 1 p.m.

Being state ranked over the final half of the season helped earn the Coast Conference co-champions a trip to Yuba, who stunned then No. 17 Contra Costa in the season finale. Juan Johnson has rushed for 1,193 yards. Quarterback Jonathan Garcia has thrown for 1,472 yards and 12 touchdowns. Yuba's defense has intercepted 18 passes this year. The Lobos have outscored opponents 109-44 in the first quarter, but have been outscored 134-120 in the second half. Quarterback David Fales is among the top  six in the state in passing yards (2,517) and touchdowns (25). Gerran Gordan has caught 52 passes. King City graduate Evan Umstead led the Lobos in tackles with 64.

Salinas volleyball

There were moments when Salinas matched defending State Division I champion Palo Alto's power at the net in Thursday's CCS Division I semifinal loss.
Alex Barbeau and Maddy Mandon had a handful of kills that blistered the court. Palo Alto just had more weapons -- three players with Division I scholarships.
I don't think the Cowboys were intimidated as much as just outplayed by a state ranked club.
And I do not think this is the end of Salinas' dominance in Monterey County with the departure of Barbeau, who is headed to UC Santa Barbara on a volleyball scholarship.
Mandon is just a sophomore along with setter Erin Reineking. And Laura Meyenberg will be a four-year outside hitter next year.
Getting to the next level will be the off-season objective.

Friday's picks

No rhyme or reason, but perfection is still a work in progress at 8-1, improving my overall mark to 81-19. Hey, if I was always right, what good would it do to make picks?

Division I
Salinas (6-4) at Homestead (7-3): I like the fact that the Cowboys have won their last four games and their last four road games. I don't like the fact that they are 0-4 against teams in the playoffs. Pick: Salinas.
Division III
Sacred Heart Cathedral (5-5) vs. Monterey (8-2) at MPC: You can't ignore the fact that SHC nearly beat Bellarmine. And you can't gauge them on their numbers based on playing in the WCAL. While SHC dropped its last three, Monterey has won six straight. Pick: Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Division IV
Menlo (7-3) vs. Carmel (10-0) at Pacific Grove: The Padres haven't played their starters for four quarters for seven weeks. Menlo's last two games have been like playoff games. Menlo's offense is difficult to defend Pick: Carmel.
Soledad (6-3-1) vs. Palma(8-1-1) at the Sports Complex: Regardless of the outcome, Soledad has had a magical year. The Chieftains will look to control the clock on the ground and wear down the Aztecs. Pick: Palma.

Bottom line

No one will come out on record and admit it.
But no team wants to be in the same league as Palma and San Benito.
Do you really think we'd have an argument if Monterey and North County were in a league with Salinas, Gilroy, Alisal, North Salinas and Alvarez?

Seaside football

Had it not been for another coach going to defense for Seaside, it might have been lumped into the 'A' Division instead of North County.
A 2-8 team being forced into a higher division?
Doesn't make a lot of sense.
Of course, Seaside has been the only MBL team willing to play Palma and Salinas over the last three years.
Seaside also has two CCS divisional titles in the last six years. And it should be talented next year.
But the big picture for this program isn't as promising. Enrollment is dropping. The entire program had 81 kids for three levels. Salinas had 70 kids for the varsity alone.
You can't move a team based on the past.

Updates

Look for updates on tonight's Salinas-Palo Alto Division I semifinal volleyball showdown on the blog.

Monterey football

I can't help but wonder if all this equity talk has become a distraction for Monterey.
Remember, they are one of two teams in the playoffs affected by the changes.
How can this not be a topic of conversation among the 15 or so juniors coming back next year?
I know the emails and texts feverishly came across my cell phone all morning.
Shouldn't we be talking playoffs?
Couldn't this meeting on Wednesday have waited until the postseason was over?

Equity proposition

What should have happened on Wednesday is Christopher should have been moved into the TCAL and North Salinas pushed down to the MBL.
In addition, Pajaro Valley should have been moved into the MTAL and Carmel moved up into the MBL.
Oh wait, the MTAL isn't a part of this.
Yet, administrators for the MTAL and SCCAL all had a vote last spring in deciding the fate of the equity league -- that they are not a part of.

Equity animosity

The equity adoption was suppose to create a more fair playing field.
 And maybe it has.
Yet, judging by the texts I'm getting from coaches, it's also created animosity.
Maybe it's a good thing a gag order was issued until Dec. 6, prohibiting coaches from talking about it.

Salinas-Palo Alto volleyball

A monumental task awaits Salinas as it travels to face top seed Palo Alto tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the CCS Division I semifinals at Milpitas High.
Palo Alto is 31-3, having fallen to one CCS opponent this year. The defending State Division I champs possess a roster with six players standing 6-feet or taller.
It has compiled over 1,200 kills this year. Someone for Salinas has got to get in front of 6-foot-5 middle blocker Melanie Wade and attempt to get a hand on the ball.
The Cowboys are going to have to get tips at the net and play great defense in the back row. This is a battle of the last two CCS Division I champions.

More equity thoughts

Lost in all the shuffling of teams from one division to the other for next fall is the new playoff plan.
The MBL's 'A' division is going to get three automatic qualifiers for football while the 'B' division gets one.
Why?
Is that suppose to provide the teams that were forced into the 'A' division incentive to accept their fate?
The top three teams in the old TCAL the last three years have been Palma, San Benito and Salinas. I do not see that changing in the 'A' division next year.
If the MTAL was only allowed one automatic qualifier, it would seldom get a second team based on points.
The same fate could follow the MBL's 'B' division runner-up.

North County football

How did North County get thrown into the mix and pushed into the MBL's 'A' division?
Speculation leading up to Tuesday's meeting had Seaside or Monte Vista being the third team to be pushed into the 'A' division along with Christopher and Monterey.
The Condors finished 5-5 last year, were outscored 179-127 and are losing the best player in the old MBL to graduation.
In addition, I only counted 15 returning players.
Are we forcing the Condors up based on their past?

Equity League

Two examples of why I don't understand the criteria of the equity league.
Alisal is moving to the 'B' division while North County is going into the 'A' division. But Alisal beat North County 7-0 in Week 2 this season.
Alvarez is moving down to the 'B' division while Monterey is being forced up into the 'A' division. But the Eagles beat Monterey 14-7 in Week 2 this year.

Mike Aldrete

The Cardinals hitting coach will become the bench coach for new manager Mike Matheny, replacing Joe Pettini.
Aldrete, a Monterey High graduate, has been a part of the Cardinals coaching staff for three years. He  will still work with hitters and hitting coach Mark McGwire.

Equity league football changes

Monterey and Christopher are headed up to the Monterey Bay League's Upper Division next fall. The big surprise is North County is joining them.
Headed to the Lower Division of the MBL will be North Salinas, Alvarez and Alisal.

CSUMB volleyball

Rheann Fall was named to the California College Athletic Association first team for the second straight year for the Otters.
The outside hitter finished second in the conference in kills per game. A 2010 All-American, she had 15 double-doubles this fall.
Fall holds five school records, including the career mark for kills (1,454) and single season record (422).
Teammate Melanie Lashbrook was named to the CCAA second team, finishing with a team high 77 blocks.

Hartnell soccer

The men's soccer team was seeded No. 1 in the Northern California playoffs and could be home for the entire postseason, which for the Panthers, begins Nov. 22.
The Coast Conference champions are ranked No. 3 in the state and No. 7 in the nation at 16-2-3.
Max Estrada is the state leader in goals for the Panthers with 29. Teammate Ivan Campos has 21 goals.

Salinas football

Remember when some of you were calling this the worst Salinas team in 15 years?
Haven't heard from you lately.
Yeah, that was a rough stretch when Salinas dropped home games to Carmel, Palma and San Benito -- who are a combined 25-3-2.
Since then the Cowboys have rattled off four in a row. I realize all four teams don't have .500 records.
However, Alisal and Gilroy would be in the playoffs had both beaten Salinas.
If Serra wasn't in Division I, this would be a wide-open division.

Monterey-SHC football

Going with a full house backfield over the last three weeks has changed Monterey's attack. Counting the quarterback, that's four runners going in four different directions.
I don't know if anyone is running better right now than Ambrose Chioini, who has 408 yards rushing in his last two games.
Monterey did something last week it hadn't done the previous two weeks. It completed a pass -- make that two passes.
Jimmy Hill is efficient throwing the ball. If you want to at least put some doubt into that Sacred Heart Cathedral defense, an occasional short pass can work as well as the run.

Top 10 football

1. Carmel: It's not their fault that they're the only undefeated team left in the CCS.
2. San Benito: In case you were sleeping under a rock, the Balers beat Palma to win the TCAL title.
3. Palma: If state is the objective, Division IV is where the Chieftains belong.
4. Christopher: A power in the making.
5. Salinas: First time in 92 years the program is in the playoffs four straight years.
6. Monterey: The MBL tri-champions have rattled off six straight wins.
7. Monte Vista: Set a school record for wins in grabbing a share of the MBL title.
8. Alisal: Missed the playoffs by a half point for the second straight year.
9. Gilroy: Dropped their last four games to miss the playoffs.
10. Soledad: In the postseason and Herald rankings for the first time in school history.

A class move

Having not received the best of films to scout Sacred Heart Cathedral, Monterey got some help from — Carmel.
Head coach Golden Anderson went over to Monterey and let them watch his game film of SHC to help the Dores better prepare.

Equity league

The meeting is tonight to decide who goes into the Monterey Bay League's Upper Division and the Lower Division. Remember the Tri-County Athletic League will no longer exist.
I'd say Christopher is a lock to move up and North Salinas is headed down. I think Alvarez could be headed down as well.
But I can't see Monte Vista Christian being forced into the Upper Division. That's not a wise move. And I'm not sure Monterey feels comfortable being pushed up with just 25 players on a varsity roster.
Arguments will be intense. But ultimately, the athletic directors vote.

JC state rankings

Hartnell's win over Monterey Peninsula College last Saturday vaulted them into the Top 25 in the state at No. 21, one spot in front of the Lobos.
The Panthers, who shared the Coast Conference title with MPC, also climbed two spots in the Northern California polls to No. 11. The Lobos are No. 13.
Both teams will compete in bowl games this weekend.

Anna Welsh

For the third straight year, distance ace Anna Welsh is headed to the state cross country championships for Monterey.
Welsh finished second last week at the CCS Division III finals, covering the 2.95 Crystal Springs course in 17:57.
It's been a dream season for Welsh, who won her third straight Monterey Bay League title, leading the Toreadores to a team title.

CSUMB women's basketball

Knocking down a school record 11 3-point goals, the Otters opened their season with a 82-58 win over the Academy of Art of San Francisco.
The Otters, who are coming off an NCAA Division II tournament appearance and school record for wins, saw Erika Ward drop in 16 points, including four baskets from beyond the 3-point arc.

3. North County: Three year starter Priscilla Mora was a double-double machine last year.
4. Watsonville: It's top two players were sophomores last winter.
5. Monterey: In a retooling mood at Monterey.
6. Monte Vista: Returns all-league guard Ashley Connor.
7. Pajaro Valley: Showed big improvement last winter.

Volleyball rankings

Final

2. Notre Dame: Perhaps one play away from still practicing today.
3. North Salinas: Won over 20 games for the third straight year.
4. San Benito: Finished in a tie for second in the TCAL.

10. King City: Stumbled down the stretch.

Salinas-Palo Alto volleyball

So who did send defending Division I state champion Palo Alto (31-3) to its three losses this year?
Two were to southern section powers Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos. The other came from WCAL nemesis St. Francis.
Two of those losses went five games.
The Division I top seeded Vikings have compiled over 1,200 kills this year -- 489 from 6-foot-5 middle blocker Melanie Wade.
Complimenting her is 6-2 outside hitter Maddie Kuppe, who has just 378 kills.
Six players stand 6-feet or taller for Palo Alto, who faces Salinas on Thursday at Milpitas at 5:30 p.m.
One other strength this year has been Palo Alto's serving. It has 180 service aces.

Monterey-SHC football

Seven of the 10 teams Sacred Heart Cathedral faced this fall are in the playoffs. Of course, six of them came out of the West Catholic Athletic League.
The Irish did stumble down the stretch, dropping their last three games by a combined score of 103-27.
Granted the MBL isn't the WCAL.
But Monterey outscored its last three opponents 116-20. During its current six game winning streak, it has outscored the opposition 210-46.
Monterey is 5-0 when it's the host team this year -- 3-0 over the last two years at MPC.

MPC football

The Lobos season isn't over after all.
Because MPC was ranked in the state and shared the Coast Conference title, it was invited and accepted a bowl bid to the Sierra Credit Union Bowl in Marysville.
The Lobos (7-3) will face Yuba College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Yuba (6-4) closed the season with a 24-14 win over No. 17 Contra Costa, finishing second in the Bay Valley Conference to Solano.
Solano will face Coast Conference co-champion Hartnell on Saturday in the Living Breath Foundation Bowl at 1 p.m. at Cabrillo College.

Homestead-Salinas

Homestead (7-3) comes out of the De Anza Division, which includes defending Division I state champion Palo Alto and perennial CCS power Los Gatos.
The Mustangs and Salinas are similar in their styles in that both run the ball 88 percent of the time.
Homestead quarterbacks only put the ball in the air 46 times all season.
Tyler Bond has rushed for 840 yards while teammate Jorge Talamante added 788 yards.
The number, however, that should get your attention is Homestead has allowed just 14.4 points a game this year.

Chat time

Join me and as many as five coaches for a live chat to talk about the prep football playoffs at 7 p.m. on  tonight on the Herald web site.

Carmel-Menlo football

After starting the season 4-0, Menlo dropped three of its next four before rallying to win its final two games to sneak into the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in Division IV.
The 26-0 shutout over defending CCS Division IV champion Sacred Heart Prep in the season finale was impressive. Efforts like that can set the tone going into the playoffs.
Plus Menlo is one program where Carmel isn't in their heads before the kickoff. It beat Carmel last year and gave them a battle in the CCS championship game two years ago.
But if Menlo lines up to stop the pass first like most teams have attempted to do against Carmel this fall, it's going to be a long night.

NBA lockout

The difference between the NBA possibility missing a full season and when the NHL missed a season six years ago is this.
NHL fans had nothing to turn to. NBA fans have college basketball, which will be as good as it's been in the last decade.
You've got a commissioner whose an ego manic and a bunch of greedy players that make more than any other professional sport.

Soledad football

You have to like the attitude Soledad is taking into its first ever playoff game against Palma.
Instead of saying why us, the Aztecs are saying why not us?
First-year head coach Frankie Berlanga wants his kids to relish playing against one of the top Division IV teams in the state.
Palma will wear Soledad down with its physical presence.
But keep this in mind: When Soledad played Carmel, at one point the game was 6-6. The Aztecs were also within a touchdown of tying the game midway through the second quarter.

Palma football

Sometimes you have to be smart enough to look at the big picture and say, maybe we don't belong in the Open Division.
Take a closer look at Palma's schedule.
Of the 10 teams it faced this fall, only three have winning records. Only four made the playoffs.
St. Joseph of Santa Maria stumbled to a 3-7 record. St. Francis is just 5-5.
However, Cardinal Newman is 9-0-1. Palma (8-1-1) played them to a 10-10 tie.
Cardinal Newman has the inside track to the State Division III bowl game if it wins the North Coast Section D-IV title. Playing Palma to a tie is a big reason it's ranked No. 1 right now in Division III.
If you're Palma, you have to be thinking that could be us next year if we are fortunate to win a CCS Division IV title, particularly when a Northern California regional game will follow after the CCS finals in 2012.

Salinas-Homestead football

Being on the road is not a bad thing for the Cowboys, who have won their last four games away from The Pit.
A four-game winning streak has Salinas (6-4) in the playoffs for the fourth straight year -- a first for the program.
Homestead (7-3) is just 3-2 at home this year. The Mustangs went 2-3 against postseason teams. Salinas  is 0-4.

Monterey-SHC football

Sacred Heart Cathedral dropped its last three games to finish 2-5 in the West Catholic Athletic League and 5-5 overall.
What got my attention, though, was the Irish's battle with state-ranked and 9-1 Bellarmine earlier this year. Sacred Heart held a 7-0 lead before the Bells used two fourth-quarter touchdowns to escape with a 14-7 decision.
I don't know if there is such a thing as a bad team in the WCAL, which explains why seven of the eight teams are in the playoffs.
Sacred Heart Cathedral did beat Terra Nova, which is in the Open Division playoffs.
The last time the Irish reached the playoffs in 2008, they won the CCS Division IV title.

Carmel-Menlo football

This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams in the last three years.
The Padres beat Menlo twice during their 12-0 2009 season, defeating them 49-14 in Week 2 and 56-35 in the CCS Division IV title game.
Menlo gained a measure of redemption with a 34-29 win in Week 2 of last season -- one of only two losses head coach Golden Anderson has absorbed in 35 games as a head coach.

Preps of the Week

Boys
Devin Pearson, Carmel football: His first three carries of the game last week resulted in 186 yards and three touchdowns, putting him over 1,000 yards rushing.
Honorable mention: Francisco Salvador, Alisal cross country; Andrea Collivadino, Carmel water polo; Ambrose Chioini, Monterey football; Antonio Velasco, Soledad football; Sam Hales, King City cross country, Randy Sosa, Greenfield cross country.

Girls
Chloe Corriveau, Santa Catalina golf: Was the counties only state qualifier, finishing in a tie for second at the Central Coast Section finals.
Honorable mention: Omalara Adenuda, Notre Dame volleyball; Michelle Watkins, Pacific Grove cross country; Alex Barbeau, Salinas volleyball; Allie Loomis, Santa Catalina water polo; Kaylan Griffith, Carmel tennis.

College Athlete of the Week

Austin Fales, Hartnell College football: The sophomore quarterback tossed four touchdown passes and rushed for a touchdown in Hartnell's title clinching win over MPC.
Honorable mention: Andrew Young, MPC men's basketball; Todd Bush, Hartnell football; Shanae Gasperson, MPC volleyball; Kevin Loustale, CSUMB men's basketball; Rheann Fall, CSUMB volleyball, Yosselin Berrueco, MPC women's soccer.

Hartnell football

The Coast Conference co-champions will face Bay Conference champion Solano in the Living Breath Foundation Bowl on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cabrillo College.
Hartnell (7-3) and Solano (6-4) have a common opponent in Monterey Peninsula College. The Panthers beat MPC last Saturday while Solano fell to the Lobos six weeks ago.

Preseason hoop picks

Without any knowledge -- when have I -- here are the teams to beat in boys basketball.

MTAL
1. Stevenson: Who in the MTAL is going to stop 6-foot-8 Tucker Forbes?
2. Carmel: Devin Pearson will be on the court by December.
3. Pacific Grove: Head coach Dan Powers is worth two wins alone on wisdom.
4. Marina: The cupboard isn't completely dry with Ricardo Esparza-Ponce back.
5. Gonzales: Returns nearly the entire team from last year.
6. Soledad: Could feed off the success of the football program.
7. King City: Will be better than last year's two-win MTAL season.
8. Greenfield: Can go nowhere but up.

MBL
1. Monterey: Stephen Dorsey is going to enjoy playing with the transfer playmaker.
2. Watsonville: The defending champions return 6-foot-7 Lamar Cowens.
3. Monte Vista: Josh Mooney and his 25 points a game are back once football ends.
4. Seaside: Graduation gutted this team of 10 players.
5. Christopher: A sleeper team in the MBL.
6. North County: Will be the most improved team in the county.
7. Pajaro Valley: Two years ago this program had more 3's than 2-point field goals.

TCAL
1. Palma: Junior Noah Allen is a legitimate Division I prospect.
2. San Benito: Return two all-leaguers, including leading scorer Jordan Belton.
3. Salinas: Lost five all-leaguers to graduation, including 6-foot-8 Frank Rogers.
4. Alvarez: This team could be lethal if everyone stays eligible.
5. Gilroy: Lost its top five scorers to graduation.
6. North Salinas: If it doubles its win total for the second straight year, the playoffs are on the horizon.
7. Alisal: The House of Thrills is going through growing pains.

11/13/2011

Christopher football

The second year program earned the No. 1 seed in Division III and will host Del Mar on Friday.
Here's betting Christopher will be in the MBL's upper division next year.

Palma football

The Chieftains are going to take a lot of criticism for this move.
But I understand the reasons as well as the reasons of teams in the WCAL.
The CCS is no longer the pinnacle.
The State championship is the ultimate goal.
The odds are against Palma ever making a State Open Division or Division I title game. For one, there is a team called De La Salle in Northern California.
Playing in its division based on enrollment gives them a shot. Probably not this year, unless a few teams fall in their section title games.
The CCS will eventually have to review their playoff format. No other section forces teams into an Open Division.

Salinas football

The Cowboys are in the Division I playoffs for the fourth straight year as the No. 6 seed. Salinas (6-4) will visit No. 3 Homestead (7-3) Friday at 7 p.m.

Alisal football

For the second straight year, Alisal misses the playoffs by a half-point.

Monterey football

How would you like to be Monterey?
In the Division III bracket is West Catholic Athletic League powers Valley Christian, Sacred Heart Cathedral and St. Ignatius.
 Ouch.

Monterey football

The Monterey Bay League tri-champion Toreadores will host Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday at 7 p.m. at Monterey Peninsula College in the Division III playoffs.

Carmel football

The Padres (10-0) were seeded No. 2 in Division IV and will host No. 7 Menlo at 7 p.m. on Friday at Pacific Grove.
Carmel is 33-2 over the last three years. One of those losses was to Menlo.

Division IV bracket

Division IV
No. 8 Soledad at No. 1 Palma.
No. 7 Menlo at No. 2 Carmel.
No. 6 Half Moon Bay at No. 3 Monte Vista Christian
No. 5 Scotts Valley at No. 4 Sacred Heart Prep.

Palma opts for Division IV

For the first time in over a decade, the Chieftains did not opt for the highest division, choosing to remain in Division IV, where they will host Soledad on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Salinas Sports Complex.

49ers

The New York Giants are very similar to the 49ers in that they play great defense and punish you on the ground.
In other words, a little boring.
But they do have a quarterback that has won a Super Bowl in Eli Manning.
So how did this team lose at home to Seattle?
Each week the 49ers playbook gets a little bigger. I'd like to see more of rookie Kendall Hunter. He's a nice compliment to Frank Gore.
If Alex Smith comes up big this week, you have to start believing in him.
This game could decide who gets the second seed and first round bye in the NFC.

What to watch

CSUMB Men's Basketball
The Otters will travel to Stockton tonight to face the University of Pacific in a non-conference game at 5 p.m.

Frank Rogers

The former Salinas High forward and Herald Player of the Year has verbally committed to play basketball in 2012 for the University of San Francisco.
The 6-foot-8 Rogers will spend this season at Cabrillo College before transferring to USF. Last year the just turned 18-year-old averaged nearly 15 points and 12 rebounds a game for Salinas.

PALMA FOOTBALL

Barring an overnight change of heart, Palma is going Division IV for the CCS playoffs.

CSUMB basketball

I'm having a hard time understanding why the NCAA is holding up Alisal graduates Oliver Caballero's paper work to get him on the court for the Otters.
The 6-foot-9 Caballero, who was born in Mexico, has to prove he didn't attend school or play any semi-pro ball when he went back to Mexico for a year after two years at San Jose State.
 Isn't six months enough time?

Dream matchup

 Palma-Carmel.
 It could happen.
Don't be surprised if Palma doesn't opt up for the Open Division on Sunday.
And you know what, Palma shouldn't. There is nothing wrong with them remaining in the division they belong in. Every other team outside the CCS stays put in the playoffs.
Personally I'd like to see a Palma-Carmel meeting.
I want to see if Carmel can play with an elite team.

Division IV playoffs

Here are the teams locked in for Division IV
Monte Vista, Carmel, Soledad, Half Moon Bay, Menlo, Sacred Heart Prep and Scotts Valley.
That's seven teams, meaning should Valley Christian not opt for the Open Division, it will not be in Division IV. Neither will Terra Nova.
That would leave Sacred Heart Cathedral. Or Palma? Just throwing it out there.

Pacific Grove football

For the third straight year, the Breakers have improved in the win column under third year head coach Chris Morgan.
This might have been Morgan's best job, considering he lost -- not one but two quarterbacks this year -- limiting his options on offense.
This is Morgan's program now. Players that will be seniors next year came into the program with him. A foundation has been set.

Playoff scenarios

There isn't a whole lot left to be decided -- unless teams in the WCAL don't opt up on Sunday for the Open Division. Right now only one team has put their name into the Open Division.
While the playoff teams likely won't change, the divisions will. It could make for some tense moments if you're a smaller division team.

Hartnell-MPC football

Monterey Peninsula College (7-2) vs. Hartnell (6-3) at Salinas High Stadium, 6 p.m.
At stake is a bowl bid for the winner. While MPC has already clinched no worse than a share of the conference title, the Panthers can stake a claim in it with a win. The game will pit MPC quarterback David Fales against his brother, Hartnell quarterback Austin Fales. The Panthers Alvin Jelks is third in the state in rushing with 1,280 yards and touchdowns (16). David Fales is fifth in the state in passing yards (2,352) and sixth in touchdowns (26). Hartnell defensive lineman Juan Pacheco is fourth in the state in sacks (10.5). During its three game winning streak, Hartnell has outscored the opposition 124-13. MPC has outscored  opponents 102-41 in the first quarter.

CCS cross county finals

A few names to look for that are chasing state berths today at Crystal Springs in Belmont.
Girls
Anna Welsh of Monterey in Division III; Camille Herhusky of Carmel in Division IV; Alex Lathos of Notre Dame in Division IV; Michelle Watkins of Pacific Grove in Division IV -- Carmel's girls team.
Boys
Francisco Salvador of Alisal in Division I; Bryan Tena of Salinas in Division I; Sam Hales of King City in Division IV, Randy Sosa of Greenfield in Division IV; Will Shearer of York in Division V -- Carmel and King City's boys teams.

Devin Pearson

His first three touches resulted in 186 yards and three touchdowns.
No doubt, Pearson is the best player in the county -- one of the top five quarterbacks I have seen in 25 years in this county.
But give some credit to that offensive line that opened up some monster holes on Friday.

Basketball coach at Salinas

Sports Illustrated senior golf writer Alan Shipnuck is a basketball coach.
A member of one of Salinas High's best ever basketball teams in the early 1990's, Shipnuck is an assistant freshman basketball coach this winter for the Cowboys.

Saturday morning thoughts

Best game: San Benito ending Palma's 28-game regular season unbeaten streak with a 13-12 win.
Biggest win: Monte Vista capturing its first ever league football title with a 17-0 win at North County.
Most important: Monterey locking up a playoff spot and a share of the MBL title with a 35-7 win.
Most disappointing: Pacific Grove scoring first, then surrendering 63 points to Carmel.

11/11/2011

CARMEL FOOTBALL

Padres route Pacific Grove 63 7.

MONTEREY SEASIDE FOOTBALL

Updates

Look for updates on tonight's rivalry games, including Seaside-Monterey and Pacific Grove-Carmel.

Weather issues

If the rain continues into the evening, the team that could be most effected tonight is Monte Vista, who is playing a rare night game on a soggy North County grass field.
The Mustangs, who can capture their first ever league title with a win, don't run the ball nearly as well as they pass it. The conditions won't be ideal to fling it 25 times.
Least effected will be Palma and San Benito, who will also play on grass at the Sports Complex. Both teams make their living running the ball.
What is a concern for all teams tonight is a wet football.

Rivalry games

Take a look at tonight's crowds at Carmel-Pacific Grove, Seaside-Monterey and San Benito-Palma.
Then look at the crowds for just the local team the following week in the postseason.
It's not even close.
In fact, the only time a county team draws a crowd that could be comparable to a rivalry game is if they reach the CCS title game.
Rivalry games are as big as they were 50 years ago on campus and in communities.

Skyler Finnell

The Stevenson senior has signed a letter-of-intent to attend the University of San Diego on a golf scholarship.
Finnell has been a part of the Pirates golf team since his freshman year.

Coaching change in hoops

One of the more successful girls basketball coaches in the county stepped down earlier this month when Leigh White resigned at Santa Catalina.
White has coached basketball in the county for 18 years, the last 10 at Santa Catalina, where she guided the program to its first three Mission Trail Athletic League titles.
During her decade at Santa Catalina, White won 160 games, twice tying the single season school record for wins with 20.

Gilroy football

What went wrong with Gilroy over its final four games?
How about allowing an average of 52.3 points a game? Twice Gilroy gave up 60 or more points to an opponent in the final three weeks, including 63 to Christopher on Thursday.
Now you know why Christopher will be in the new MBL's upper division next year.
