Top 10 football

1. Carmel: It's not their fault that they're the only undefeated team left in the CCS.
2. San Benito: In case you were sleeping under a rock, the Balers beat Palma to win the TCAL title.
3. Palma: If state is the objective, Division IV is where the Chieftains belong.
4. Christopher: A power in the making.
5. Salinas: First time in 92 years the program is in the playoffs four straight years.
6. Monterey: The MBL tri-champions have rattled off six straight wins.
7. Monte Vista: Set a school record for wins in grabbing a share of the MBL title.
8. Alisal: Missed the playoffs by a half point for the second straight year.
9. Gilroy: Dropped their last four games to miss the playoffs.
10. Soledad: In the postseason and Herald rankings for the first time in school history.

Wait, wait, wait. You put Carmel on top based on the fact they're undefeated? That's it? How about strength of schedule? Does Carmel's NEGATIVE 18.2 compare to San Benito's 14.1 or Palma's 12.6?

By your theory, does Carmel also out-rank De La Salle and Bellarmine? And Mitty? Serra?

Takes more than a 10-0 season in a negatively rated schedule of opponents to get to the top in the world of actual rankings.

It's not my theory.
Carmel was ranked No. 2 all year behind Palma. Palma lost. You don't leapfrog a team over another just because of strength of schedule

While I bleed Carmel Red and Gray, I'd put Hollister at the top, Palma second and the Padres third.

But let me make these three points.

1) Wasn't a lot of difference in the results when Carmel and Palma beat their common opponent this year.

2) Hate to put you on the spot Coach Zenk...but you did say (after having faced all three teams) that you put Carmel at the top followed by Hollister and Palma.

3) Suppose Secretariat ran a bunch of races at county fairs in the first couple of years of his career. Nobody would know how good he really was. Isn't that what the strength of schedule really tells you? Not much. I love computer models, but how does the model treat a team like Carmel when their second and third strings are playing so much? Does the model take away points for not beating a Gonzales or Marina by 75 points...or giving up touchdowns (even though the second team was in there) to other teams having a bad season?

I'll stand by my ranking...Hollister, Palma and Carmel. But I don't rank them that way just because of their strength of schedule. I can see reasons that are not unreasonable as to why others might rank them in a different order.

Now having said that, I will say that Carmel has been the dominant area school when you look at results over the past three years...and I don't care what league they played in. But that is just my opinion.

We all know strength of schedule is actually a big factor.

Anyone want to guess how many losses Palma would have suffered playing Carmel's schedule the last 3 years? I think it is safe to say zero.

Would Carmel have lost only 2 games playing Palma's schedule? Doubtful. St. Francis 6 times, Cardinal Newman 3 times, St. Joseph's twice, Valley Christian, Oak Grove, etc. Not to mention every TCAL team 3 times.

Hopefully we will get a chance to see the two play each other.
