Carmel-MVC football

Erase a two-interception outing against Monterey, and Monte Vista quarterback Taylor Cohan has been nearly flawless.
The 6-foot-3, 201 pound senior has thrown for nearly 2,000 yards and 27 touchdown passes this year, with just four interceptions — two against Monterey — in 230 attempts.
Last week in his first ever playoff game, Cohan was 23-of-27 for 284 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-11 win over Half Moon Bay.

This could be a very good game. Team with defense with will this one.

No doubt Cohan and his receiving corps can carry this team on their shoulders. But you cannot overlook Rondez, Mooney and Renteria as running backs. Especially since Rondez and Mooney have also proven they can catch the ball too.

MVC opened the season with a 395 yard rushing performance against St Francis CCC. In nearly half their games they have rushed for over 100 yards to go along with their passing attack.

But it certainly is a pass first offense...with lots of "practice" in game situations under their belt. In 5 of 11 games, Cohan has put the ball up 24 or more times. With a season completion percentate of 64% he is third best among the area's top 10 quarterbacks. And he had games with a completion percentage of 85% (Half Moon Bay), 76% (Pajaro valley) and 72% (Alvarez). Tends to be more of a drop back passer but has shown the ability to move the pocket and deliver the ball. If he gets hot then the Padres will really have their hands full.

And the receiving group certainly is very good. (Or maybe that should be VERY good.) 18% of Cohan's pass completions result in a touchdown. Daich is a big target who runs his routes very well with deceptive speed. Mooney, Renteria, Saporito and Griffen all have great hands and get open.

Good sized line with good technique. Clearly well coached.

And on the other side of the ball a very good defense especially against a team like Carmel that doesn't have a lot of offensive size and a bunch of big running backs. Saporito is one of the area leaders in interceptions. Hightower and Tokar are very good linebackers. And Mooney is a force on the defensive as well as the offensive side.

I think this will be a very fun game to watch. I agree with NorCal that defense is the key. I'm hoping the Padres come out on top.
