The Chieftains are going to take a lot of criticism for this move.
But I understand the reasons as well as the reasons of teams in the WCAL.
The CCS is no longer the pinnacle.
The State championship is the ultimate goal.
The odds are against Palma ever making a State Open Division or Division I title game. For one, there is a team called De La Salle in Northern California.
Playing in its division based on enrollment gives them a shot. Probably not this year, unless a few teams fall in their section title games.
The CCS will eventually have to review their playoff format. No other section forces teams into an Open Division.
