Bowl bids
According to Cal-Hi Sports, Marin Catholic (11-0) has moved in front of Cardinal Newman (10-0-1) for the Division III bowl bid from the north.
The two North Coast Section powers are on a collision course to meet in the Division III finals.
Escalon sits at No. 3 at 12-0 with Palma No. 4 at 9-1-1. Carmel is No. 7 at 11-0. Six teams in the top 10 in Division III are undefeated.

Marin Catholic wins NCS D3 and they will go to bowl. Escalon will have a tough game this week against Central Catholic. If theywin, thy probably will run through the section in SJS and be undefeated for 2 strainght years. I see only Marin catholic being picked over them due to being defending state champs and Central Catholic win could be as good as any Cardinal newman win with exception of them defating Marin catholic (but they would have tie with Palma). Carmel could have a legitimate shot of MC, and Escalon lose and Newman winsand Carmel upsets Palma in a couple weeks (still have to defeat MVC). Could be an interesting couple weeks.
I love mvc is so under the radar, all the talk is carmel/ palma and a bowl bid!!!! Keep it up!!
Chuck...This is another thing that makes the "system" unfair. As we have seen in the past, if you are not a part of the conversation early in the season, then your odds of getting a state bowl bid are almost nil. Which means if MVC beats Carmel and Palma, they will still be a relative unknown and remain under the radar.
Of course a CCS title would be good for MVC as far as next year goes...a CCS win this year will make them part of the conversation at the start of next year.
Good luck to your team on Friday. I have watched them several times and am very impressed. No doubt in my mind that MVC (even today) deserves as much consideration as Carmel for a state bowl bid...just as I said until you get yourself on the radar you are out of sight and out of mind even if you do big things this late in the season.
By the way, if you want to help your team get on the radar you should be in email conversation with Mark Tennis. I imagine that is how Christopher got themselves on Mark Tennis' most recent bubble.
I love that Chuck uses his real name. But I have to tell you Chuck, MVC is not under the radar. At least one reporter had this team winning the MBL in August.
If we want to pat ourselves on the back, I said the same thing. Back in August. I also said that MVC would be one of the teams Carmel did NOT want to face in the play-offs. MVC reminds me of the 2009 Menlo team...only better especially on the defensive side.
I think Friday's game will be a great battle. And will not be surprised to see MVC come out on top.
But I do want the Padres to win.
Hey Guys, I didn't intend my comment to suggest for a minute MVC should be in consideration for a bowl bid, NOT at all. I just want all the attention to be centered around the other guys /teams. MVC wants to be the underdog. That's what I meant. Sometime teams look past their upcoming opponent to the next game. I do think it will be closer than people think, turnovers penalties could be key. MVC has a strong defense, very fast, all though, not suited for a big power runner / offense line ie., Monterey this year. By the way Carmekyd, I really enjoy reading your comments!!!, great knowledge on sports / high school football, very refreshing!! Good luck to both teams, stay healthy!!!
Unfortunately MVC will have next to nil shot at getting the bowl bid. While if they win the CCS playoff, the loss will knock them out based on strength of schedule and no common oppents with any of the leading candidates. As mentioned- the likely team to get the bowl bid will come from NCS D3 or if Escalon wins their section. Palma is out except very low chance and carmel would have the best shot with playoff championship, but only in the specific scenrios players. Not saying Carmel is garanteed to defet MVC (I think they will though) or Palma (I don't think they will defeat Palma).
Being converstation or early talk of the bowl bid has little to do with having a shot of bowl bid. Winning a section championship automatically qualifies a team for consideration, Strength of schedule is weighted in, common opponents and results with the candidates being considered are major weights. If MVC wins the CCS champonship, they would qualify for consoideration. Problem is they have a loss and their strength of schedule is less than many of the NCS teams and even Escalon. Odds are there will be an undefeated NCS team and the strength of their playoff and season would be higher.... Only reason carmel would be in high consideration is they win section and are undefeated would qualify them and they would have no loss. Their strength of schedule while not super would be helped by dominant win over Salinas (who is in CCS semis D1)and a win over Palma (which would also help MVC). Problem is the loss would knock them out of consideration. Only team with a realistic shot for bowl bid is Carmel if the win championship. Both Palma and MVC are out no matter what. If MVC went undefeated, a similar scenario would hold if MVC defeated Palma. The loss will knock MVC out of consideration. Only realistic hope for this division is Cardinal Newman wins NCS, escalon loses, and Carmel wins champonship (I don't think Carmel will match up very well with palma). If Novato defeats Cardinal Neman and wins section (won't happen-they loss by 30+ to Marin Catholic) there is ashot for CCS if Escalon losses this week (which could happen) or even Encinal..If Encinal wins- they probably get picked over CCS and Campolindo which would be undefeated would be picked over CCS. Marin catholic would go if they win out and go undefeated. MVC has no realistic shot to get in to bowl.
