Gonzales
Talk about a rough start to the season.
The Spartans dropped their first four games by scores of 15, 33, 39 and 40. Yes, it got worse with each game.
Turning a corner would mean having a short memory. Five days after absorbing its worst loss of the year, Gonzales won its first game.
Tony Perez is back to provide the offense with a shot in the arm. And Noe Vasquez was named to an all-tournament team earlier this month. Yes, there's hope in south county.

Soledad
Five years removed from its first and only Mission Trail Athletic League title, the Aztecs have not had a winning season since.
It has changed coaches twice, with alum Steven Terry piloting the program this year. One key part to his rebuilding project is Daniel Bocanegra.
The sharpshooter earned all-tournament honors earlier this year at the Eagle Classic. Soledad took its lumps in the preseason, falling to reigning league champions Salinas and Watsonville.
If this program can build some chemistry and play a little defense, it can be in the pack of a balanced MTAL.

Defensive back Reggie Topps will be in the secondary today for the University of Utah when it faces Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl.
Topps, a North County graduate, has played in all 12 games for Utah as a nickel back, recording 32 tackles and one interception.
The junior has 16 solo tackles, four tackles for losses, two sacks, four pass breakups and one forced fumble. Topps also plays on special teams, returning a blocked punt for a touchdown in 2010.

Greenfield
The Bruins did the right thing in scheduling teams in the preseason they felt they could compete with.
Confidence is contagious, no matter who the opponent is on the other end of the floor.
This program has never had a winning overall record in 11 years, although Greenfield did post an 8-6 MTAL mark during the 2002-2003 season.
The school record for wins is nine. That's not likely to be broken this year, although leading scorer Abel Pacheco is back. Stealing a win or two in the MTAL is realistic.

King City
If you're looking for a sleeper team in the MTAL, King City is as athletic as any team in the MTAL.
Most, however, are seasonal basketball players that jump into the gym in mid November after football season ends.
Four of King City's top five leading scorers came off the football field, including returning all-league center Ralph Rianda.
King City doesn't lack size with 6-foot-3 Zane Carroll along side Rianda. The Mustangs did hold two of their first three opponents under 35 points.

Palma
Chemistry doesn't come with just a couple of practices. Five players from the CCS champion football team arrived six weeks late.
I don't expect Palma to hit its stride until the start of TCAL play, which is when it really matters. That being said, it gave nationally ranked Mitty a fight in its first game with the core intact.
Noah Allen will be hard to slow down this year. Once the leash was taken off last winter, the 6-foot-6 guard averaged over 18 points a game in the second half of the season.
Allen is a treat to watch.
Allen was one of four sophomores from last year's team that are back. Jack Powers is a 260-pound force in the paint while Jack Tardieu provides Palma with another shooter on the perimeter.

Salinas
Three starters, including USF bound Frank Rogers, graduated from last year's TCAL title team.
Not that this group needed any added pressure, but head coach Joe Chappell needed three wins to break the CCS record for wins as a boys basketball coach.
Done.
Nothing has changed.
The Cowboys won their first three games with that lunch pale attitude.
The cupboard isn't completely bare with the return of 6-4 Arthur Caldwell, who will be a beast in the paint this year.
This is a good size team with 6-2 Josef Delk playing a guard spot.

Senior fullback John Tyndall will play his final collegiate game tonight when Cal faces Texas in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego.
Tyndall, a Pacific Grove product, has played in 11 games for the Bears this season, primarily as a blocking back and special teams demon. He does have one catch for 13 yards and one carry for five yards.
Tyndall's younger brother Bill, is a backup offensive lineman for Cal, who closed the season by winning three of its final four games to earn a bowl berth.

Seven wins last season may not seem like progress. But seven wins more than doubled the Vikings total from the previous season.
North Salinas' 5-1 start out of the gates this year is its best start since 2007-2008, when it lost just seven games all year.
Daniel Vonn-Victorino is a load in the paint as a 6-5 power forward. Sam Ramos can light it up from the outside.
For North Salinas to make noise in the TCAL, it has to execute the basics, such as sinking free throws, being patient on offense and tenacious on defense.

The last time Alisal finished with a sub .500 overall record in 2002, it still won a share of a league title.
That wasn't the case last winter as the Trojans stumbled to an 1-11 Tri-County Athletic League mark.
Missing last year was a presence in the paint. That's still the case this year. Alisal will rely on emotion and quickness to create headaches for opponents.
Wins are earned in the TCAL. I'm not sure we're looking at a worst to first scenario. But Alisal will win more than one TCAL game this year.

How can you not like the athleticism on this team? Now will that translate to success on the court?
Alvarez jumped out to a 3-0 start this year, just like it has the last four years. Each time, it has faltered down the stretch.
The Eagles can match up with anyone. Sophomore Ronnie Turner was brought up last year. Mitchell Wood provides a presence in the paint at 6-5.
Is there a reason to believe it will be different this year? A lot will depend on the core remaining intact for an entire season.

The return of leading scorer and all-leaguer Jordan Belton provides the offense with an infusion. The playmaker averaged just under 20 points a game in the Balers first five games.
Belton has help this winter in the form of forward Isaiah Acfalle, who leads the team in 3-point goals through the preseason.
And Hyram Miskim, the TCAL Freshman of the Year last season, is running the floor with a lot more confidence this year.
Will it be enough for the Balers to stick their nose in the TCAL title hunt with Palma and Salinas? San Benito hasn't won a league title since 2004.

Could we see the same magical turnaround that the football team put together this past fall after just one season?
Don't bet against the Cougars.
Remember, this is a program that returns their entire squad from last year's 8-17 inaugural season. Some of Christopher's players missed the first five weeks because of football season.
Among them is Nick Cordova, who led the Cougars in scoring last year.
Still, cracking the top three in the MBL will be a tall order.
Then again, what do I know? I had the championship football team finishing fifth.

Going winless gets unwarranted attention.
That won't be the case this year after the Condors ended a 28-game losing streak in their second game of the season.
First year coach Duncan Edwards did a masterful job of holding this team together last winter through some lean times. As the lopsided losses mounted, the Condors kept fighting.
This is still a program that isn't or shouldn't measure success based on wins and losses. Progress has been evident through the first month.

Josh Mooney is more than just a football player blowing past defenders in the open field. The guard is a blur on the hardwood as well.
The senior was among the Central Coast Section leaders in scoring last year, leading the Monterey Bay League at 24.5 points -- or just over 50 percent of the Mustangs offense.
Mooney sizzled from outside the 3-point arc, draining 80 3-point goals. Stop Mooney and you cut off the circulation of the Mustangs offense. Right?
Easier said than done after Monte Vista reached the MBL tournament final before falling to Seaside. What will help Mooney and the Mustangs is seven sophomores from last year's team are a year older.

Don't be mislead by the Wildcatz slow start out of the gates. Still on the floor for the reigning MBL champions is 6-foot-7 Ivo Basor and all-league guard Lamar Cowans.
Those are two solid parts to build off of from a team gutted by graduation. Two of Watsonville's losses to start the year were by five points or less. Another came from CIF power St. Mary's of Stockton.
Basor gives the Wildcatz an inside presence while Cowans will create matchup problems at the top of the perimeter.
The cast around the pair is still a work in progress. Junior Alex Chavez gives them an outside presence, which could force teams from doubling down on Basor in the paint.

Just two players are back from last years MBL tournament championship team. Two.
But hold off on those eulogies for the Spartans.
This is still a program with a lot of athleticism, quickness and tradition, led by play making guard Joseph Jakubowsky, who spent the first month of the season heeling a severe ankle sprain from football.
I don't put much stock into non-league records -- good or bad. But I do gauge progress and Seaside has taken steps in the right direction.

It's hard not to like the makeup of this team.
Stephen Dorsey is going to give you 12 to 15 points and 10 to 12 rebounds a night. Chris Russo is a lightning quick guard and transfer Brandon Hanson could be special.
Scoring shouldn't be a problem. But can the Toreadores defend. History suggests Monterey will go out and attempt to out run you. But that doesn't work in the playoffs.
If this team wants to go beyond the first round of the postseason, it has to buy into playing defense.

That theory that one player can put a team on their shoulders in basketball isn't holding true at North County.
Priscila Mora is averaging a county high 22 points a game. She's pulling down 19.3 rebounds a game. The 5-foot-10 senior leads the Condors in assists, blocks and steals.
Yet, North County is just 1-6 going into tonight's battle with 5-1 Soquel. Perhaps cutting one of its leading scorers from last year for undisclosed reasons wasn't a good move.

Game that intrigues me
Tonight's battle between Seaside and Alvarez intrigues me.
Two athletic teams that will probably turn this game into a track meet.
The Eagles have a little more size with the Turner brothers and 6-foot-5 Mitchell Wood patrolling the paint.
Seaside is lightning quick with transfer Marcus Hughes playing alongside Joseph Jakubowky and Kyle Hieb.
A common opponent is North Salinas, which Seaside fell to 58-56 while Alvarez rallied for a 48-43 win.

4. Monterey: Still developing chemistry on the court.
5. Watsonville: Two dynamic options on offense.
6. Alvarez: Potentially explosive on the offense end.
7. North Salinas: One more win equals all of last year's total.
8. Seaside: May have found a jewel in transfer Marcus Hughes.
9. Monte Vista: Josh Mooney is averaging 23 points a game.
10. Christopher: One of its wins came against Alvarez.
Palma linemen
His full attention is on basketball now. And it showed on Tuesday when Jack Powers came off the bench in the second half to produce 11 points, eight rebounds and one dazzling assist for Palma.
The 6-foot-6, 258-pound defensive end also drew rave reviews last weekend in an all-star underclassmen football combine in Fresno.
Also invited to the combine was teammate Hildelv Manzur, who is one of the top ranked heavyweight wrestlers in the Central Coast Section.

Orlando Johnson
Despite being held to nine points in a loss to Cal on Tuesday, the former Palma product is the nations No. 4 leading scorer at 22.4 points a game for UC Santa Barbara.
The 6-foot-5 Johnson, the Big West Conference Tournament Player of the Year the last two years, leads the Gauchos in minutes played (36.5), rebounds (7.2), assists (3.2) and steals (1.1).
Johnson dropped in a season high 36 points in a loss to UNLV. He has led Santa Barbara in scoring six times.

Santa Catalina hoops
When is a 1-5 start somewhat misleading?
When you see that two losses came in the final minutes and three are from teams that are a combined 17-4 this season, including a defending league champion.
Yet, while three freshmen help fill out the Cougars roster, this is still a team with three starters that have been on the varsity roster since their freshmen years.
Right now the chemistry isn't there.
And now Santa Catalina goes on a 15-day break between games.

You don't need to use the excuse that the Chieftains have struggled because six players arrived from the CCS Division IV champion football team seven weeks late.
The Chieftains are 2-3 because they've played two teams that are unbeaten -- one of which is ranked No. 15 in the nation in Mitty.
It won't get any easier as Palma faces San Francisco Section power Burton tonight as well as 6-1 Soquel and Santa Cruz, who knocked them out of the playoffs last year.
Then Palma heads to the St. Francis Tournament before opening league play against defending TCAL champion Salinas.

While it's not last year's record setting 16-0 start, the Otters are off to a 7-1 overall mark going into the 11-day Christmas break.
The defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champions have benefited from playing their first eight games at home -- jumping out to a 4-0 conference start.
But the next five games are road trips, including a stop at UC San Diego. Two of their four losses last year came from the Tritons.

Don't be so quick to assume Salinas can't defend its Tri-County Athletic League title.
Where they exposed a little bit in falling to Seaside by three points last Thursday?
Well, Salinas doesn't have the same quickness it possessed last year from the guard play.
But again, I don't put a lot of emphasis on tournament games, particularly during the Christmas Holidays. Different tip off times, different school schedules, different atmosphere.
That being said, Salinas looked good in a win over Monterey on Saturday. Arthur Caldwell is one of the elite post players in the area that you're not hearing a lot about.

Oliver Caballero
Arguably the biggest signing for the Otters in the off-season has yet to play a game. And now their is some concern on whether the former Alisal High star will be cleared by the NCAA.
The 6-foot-9 Caballero has missed the teams first seven games -- a third of the season. The NCAA still has not made a decision on his eligibility.
Caballero, who moved from Mexico when he was 18, played two seasons at San Jose State before a back injury sidelined him in 2009.

Priscilla Mora
A silver lining in a rough start for North County has been the consistent effort of senior Priscilla Mora, who is averaging 22.3 points and 18.8 rebounds a game through a 1-5 start.
In her last two games, the three-year starter and reigning Monterey Bay League Player of the Year has hit 20-29 shots from the field. Mora is averaging nearly three blocks, three assists and three steals a game.

Being optimistic, maybe we can blame the preseason schedules for the slow starts.
But not one team in the Mission Trail Athletic League has a winning record through the first two weeks of the preseason.
Two teams remain winless, both of which made the playoffs last year.

49ers
Can the 49ers run the ball against Pittsburgh's new version of the Steel Curtain on Monday night?
Because if the 49ers find themselves in third-and-five's or longer, it's going to be a long night.
In the 49ers last two losses, they've converted less than 20 percent on third down.
Remember, you're asking Alex Smith to manage a game, not win it -- particularly with an offensive line that can't pass protect.
This is a statement game for the 49ers. Prime time, their turf, a team coming off a Super Bowl.

I don't put much stock into tournament games, particularly when you're playing for third place on a Saturday afternoon.
But could depth be an issue for the Toreadores?
We know they have three of the top eight players in the county.
But production beyond the Big 3 has been minimal at best. And this team has defensive lapses.
That's got to change for Monterey to be taken seriously in the playoffs.

Evan Smith unties Suh's shoes?
In an interview with KXTG in Portland, here is what former Packers offensive lineman Matt Brock suggested might have triggered Ndamukong Suh to go after Salinas High product Evan Dietrich-Smith and stomp him on Thanksgiving.
Here's a transcript of Brock's interview, courtesy of MLive.com.
The center, or one of his guards, he's had like one or two starts in his career and he's got to play against Suh. So he's pretty puckered, right? So, he's talking to James, the offensive line coach, going, "What do I do? What do I do?"
James is just in his mind going, "This guy is going to get killed. I got to take his mind off it, give him something else to do." So he says, "Ok, every time you're in a pile, I want you to focus on something. I want you to untie his shoes."
He goes, "What?"
"Anytime you can, just reach in, he's got floppy shoe laces, he doesn't spat or anything, just untie his shoes. It will irritate him."
He untied his shoes three times in the game. That's why he stomped him. That's why he banged his head on the ground and he stomped him. When (Suh) went to the sideline it looked like he was telling the coach, "I didn't do anything" and he put his foot up like, "I didn't stomp him. I didn't do anything." He was actually going, "The damn guy keeps untying my shoes."
But did Suh stomp on the right player?

I'm a believer.
I wasn't sold on North Salinas (6-0) until Friday, when it rallied from a double-digit deficit to defeat Carmel.
Four of its previous five wins came against teams with a combined 2-17 record.
And while Carmel sits at 2-4, it is the defending MTAL champions.
Darren Jackson didn't bring up five freshmen to watch. I'd hand the TCAL title to North Salinas today if it could shoot better than 31 percent from the field.

Saturday morning thoughts
Marcus Hughes is a nice addition to the Seaside roster. The Illinois transfer is dynamic on defense in harassing guards. And he provides points off the bench. One more thing. He's a senior, one of only three on the roster.
I want to know why Monterey got stuck facing Antelope in the first round of the Carmel Basketball Invitational?
I'm curious to see how 6-2 North Salinas responds today against Escalon after a running clock was used in a loss to Antelope.
Anyone notice that Alisal's boys soccer team knocked off the nations No. 11 ranked team in De La Salle on Friday?

The Toreadores have arguably three of the top five players in the county.
Yet, they are just 4-3.
Don't panic. Don't start blaming the coach.
Just be patient.
Monterey has lost to three teams that -- well, are pretty good.
Antelope is 7-1 this year, having gone 27-7 last year in reaching the State Northern California Division II semifinals.
Santa Cruz is coming off a State Northern California Division IV semifinal appearance while Valley Christian -- yes that Valley Christian -- is off to a 4-1 start this winter.
Sometimes when you have three dynamic scoring options, you try and spread the ball around too much instead of taking that open shot.

North Salinas boys hoops
Tonight will be a pop quiz for the Vikings, who face defending Carmel Classic champion Antelope.
North Salinas (6-1) may not see a more balanced team the rest of the season. Antelope was impressive in beating Monterey on Thursday.
One win away from matching all of last year's win total, that unselfishness that has been on display all season will need to be exhibited tonight for North Salinas.
That being said, 6-foot-5 center Daniel Vann Victorino needs touches in the paint. He was 10-of-14 in the key on Thursday.
If North Salinas can knock down a few shots from the perimeter, which it did on Thursday, that will keep Antelope from sagging down on Vann Victorino.

Have we underestimated Seaside? Or did we overestimate Salinas?
Maybe a little of both. I'm not going to get to caught up in one non-league game.
Salinas didn't match up well with the Spartans quickness in a three-point loss Thursday night on a mutual court.
A lot of teams are going to have trouble with Seaside's athleticism on the court -- as long as the Spartans can play under control.
Chalk that up to youth. Sometimes Seaside gets a little scattered in pushing the pace. Then again, that comes with the tempo.

In between a seven-game winning streak were a pair of two-game losing skids. During that seven-game run, the co-Coast Conference champions were as good as anyone in the state.
David Fales was among the state leaders in passing, as was Gerran Gordan in receptions, and Jake Davis in touchdown catches.
The Lobos made a habit out of jumping out and dominating teams in the first quarter. The second half wasn't always as impressive. It cost them their final two games. Final grade: A minus.

Hartnell (8-3)
Closing the season with five straight wins, a share of the Coast Conference title and a bowl win earned the Panthers a state ranking.
The last time Hartnell won a bowl game, current Saints all-pro guard Carl Nicks was in the trenches. I don't see another six-year bowl drought.
When four players turned down scholarships to return to Hartnell for their sophomore years, it showed all far the program has come in terms of respect. That carries a lot of weight in recruiting. Final grade: A.

4. Christopher: My preseason pick to win the MBL.
5. Notre Dame: Regaining its swagger under John Given.
6. Salinas: Opened some eyes in a narrow loss to San Benito.
7. Greenfield: Off to a school record 5-0 start.
8. King City: Has cooled after a blistering start.
9. Carmel: Sarah Anderson has found her touch from beyond the 3-point arc.
10. Alvarez: Is 2-1 in games decided by two points or less.

Monterey (9-3)
We all wondered how the defending MBL champion Toreadores would respond after being humbled in their league opener by Christopher.
What followed was a six-game winning streak, including wins over previously unbeaten Monte Vista and arch rival Seaside -- to grab a share of the MBL title.
I wouldn't say Monterey overachieved. But this was a team that had to fill 14 starting positions when the year started with just 28 players.
The reward is a move to the MBL's 'A' division next year. Final grade: A minus.

This game intrigues me today in the 64th Carmel Classic.
The defending MTAL champion Padres are off to an 0-5 start while North Salinas is going in the opposite direction at 4-1.
We know the Padres are better than their record. The entire team didn't get on the floor together until the fifth game. But North Salinas is not the first round draw you want when you're struggling.
Does Carmel have anyone to disrupt 6-foot-5 Daniel Vonn-Victorino? Who is going to be that second option in the Padres offense behind Devin Pearson?

Seaside (2-8)
Growing pains were expected from a program that started just two seniors most of the season.
A 2-8 record was not.
To a degree, the Spartans underachieved this year. They were their own worst enemy in three of their first four losses.
Seaside never recovered from an 0-3 start in missing the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
Seaside's absence from the postseason will be brief. Its leading receiver was a sophomore. Its top rusher is coming back along with the quarterback and its two best linemen.
The mistakes made on the field this fall will be in the rear view mirror next season. Final grade: C minus.

Stephen Dorsey
We know that the Monterey center will provide a double-double nearly everytime he steps on the court for the Toreadores.
But where the 6-foot-6 Dorsey is most valuable is in disrupting shots. The senior has already blocked 28 shots through Monterey's first six games.
That's nearly five shots a game. If Dorsey's not swatting an opponents shot, he's likely forcing an errant attempt over his outstretched arms.

The status of two-time All-County guard Victoria Dorn is uncertain.
The Spartans leading scorer the last two years and arguably the best player in the Monterey Bay League, has missed the last two games with a knee injury.

In her absence, Sabrina Neal, who just returned from an injury, is averaging 19 points a game.

Monte Vista (10-2)
Magical.
That's how I would describe the Mustangs record breaking season, which brought them a share of the Monterey Bay League title and first ever 10-win season.
Monte Vista's rise to a title wasn't a surprise. It opened the season with eight consecutive wins behind quarterback Taylor Cohan and receiver Austin Daich.
The offense was explosive. The defense was dominating, holding eight teams to a touchdown or less. Seven starters went both ways. Final grade: A

North County (5-5)
The Condors never got off on the right track, losing their quarterback for the first three games of the year for undisclosed reasons.
Moving Michael Lopez behind center meant he would touch the ball on every snap. But it also meant 11 defenders knew what was coming.
North County had its moments when it won three straight games to improve to 4-2. What followed was a 1-4 finish -- three of those losses coming from the tri-champions of the MBL. Final grade: C.

Should we be concerned about an 0-5 start for the defending MTAL champions?
Not really.
Four of those losses came with three potential starters still playing football.
That being said, there are just two players back from last year's title team -- one starter.
Devin Pearson is a difference maker on the court. But he didn't pick up a basketball until football season ended nine days ago. Developing chemistry on the court is what non-league play is for.
The Padres have 21 days before beginning defense of their title.

In case you didn't know
Basketball has a running clock rule as well.
If a team is up by 40 or more points going into the fourth quarter, a running clock is enforced.
The rule in football was 35 points.
We've already had one game this year where a running clock was used in the fourth quarter.

Winless last year and mired in a 28-game losing streak that dated back to 2010, the Condors are 3-3 this year.
Two of those wins came against defending MTAL champion Carmel and Gilroy.
This is still a cast of unknowns on the court. I wouldn't put them in the conversation for an MBL title. But this is clearly the most improved team in the county.

Monterey football
I can see why Monterey was pushed into the upper division of the Monterey Bay League next fall. All of its skilled players -- playmakers -- will be back next year.
But can Monterey replace its beef in the trenches? That was the cornerstone of an offense that rushed for nearly 3,000 yards.
And how long can a team with a roster under 30 players compete in a league where the average roster hovers over 50 players? Depth is an issue when players go both ways.
I can see this move working for one year.

I admit it. I didn't see this coming. Maybe I was the only one. Oh, we knew Christopher was going to be better. The entire team was back from its inaugural season of varsity football.

The Cougars were entertaining on offense and physical on defense. This is not a one-year deal. There are 24 players coming back, including two freshmen that saw extenstive time. Final grade: A.

Watsonville (2-8)
When you only score 15 points in the first quarter all season, you're probably going to be playing from behind often.
I thought the Wildcatz would have at least doubled their win total this year. How does a team with two guys rushing for nearly 2,000 yards win just two games?
Defensively Watsonville gave up 33 or more points five times. With an offense geared towards the run, it didn't have the capabilities of playing from behind. Final grade: D plus.

The Bruins are off to their best start in their 12 year existence at 4-0, having beaten two teams out of the Monterey Bay League and one from the Tri-County Athletic League.
What does it mean?
Depends on how you look at it. The four teams Greenfield has beaten didn't have a winning record last year. Still all four wins were impressive, especially on the defensive end.
Greenfield has not allowed more than 33 points in a game. You're going to win a lot of games holding teams under 35 points.

While the 80-34 blowout in the Coach Wilson Memorial Tournament was impressive, the 61-60 last second win to reach the finals a day earlier caught my attention.
The Toreadores won a tight game in the final seconds against a solid team. That's clutch. Those are the games that build confidence down the stretch.
I really like Monterey's fab five on the court before tipoff. And while the bench doesn't need to score a lot, it has to provide quality minutes in critical situations to take the next step.

Stevenson took a step back this year after compiling a 6-4 record last fall. During a five-game losing skid, it was outscored 167-21.
Some have suggested that Stevenson should play eight man football. It's hard to compete over 10 games when your numbers are in the low 20's. Final grade: C minus.

I didn't see the progress I had hoped for from Marina this year. It played two more games and scored one less point on the season.
The 17 straight losses to begin its era in 11-man football does not concern me as much as was Marina competitive?
The answer is no. Running clocks were used in the fourth quarter in seven games. On the bright side, Marina established a junior varsity program that registered a win.
The core of its varsity will be back. There are some parts to play with. But if this school is going to continue to have sports, it needs proper facilities and equipment. You have to provide some hope for these kids. Final grade: D.

49ers
The NFC Western Division champions need to maintain that lunch pale attitude down the stretch. Locking up the No. 2 seed is as important as winning the division.
The 49ers seem to have the Cardinals number, having won the last five meetings. But Arizona is still in a playoff chase. And they are coming off a big win over Dallas in the desert.
I wouldn't be surprised if Jim Harbaugh does a little experimenting with the offense. Expect more carries from rookie Kendall Hunter. The defense still has not allowed a rushing touchdown all season.

MPC men's basketball
With nine freshmen on the roster this winter, the Lobos are going through growing pains, having dropped their last two games in the final seconds.
One bright spot continues to be 6-foot-8 sophomore Andrew Young, who dropped in 20 or more points and 20 or more rebounds for the second straight game.
The Lobos are doing some good things. In Friday's loss, they hit 17-of-19 from the free throw line. Young was 10-of-10. Like most young teams, turnovers are costing them games.
Straighten that out before conference play begins on Jan. 4 and the Lobos will be contenders.
One other player that's picking up the pace is Donovan Salvant, who had 16 points in his last game — as many points as the former Seaside standout had in his first eight games.

Salinas football
Take a look at Salinas' non-league schedule for the first three weeks of the 2012 season.
Unable to take part in the Capital Bowl because of date conflicts, Salinas will face 2010 CCS Division I champion Piedmont Hills in the Kickoff Classic on Aug. 30 at The Pit.
It will host Homestead in Week 2 in a rematch of the CCS Division I semifinals, and will face PAL Bay Division champions Terra Nova in Week 3.

If the Pirates find their stroke from the 3-point line, they could be lethal.
In a 20-point win over Pajaro Valley on Thursday, Stevenson connected on just 2-of-21 from beyond the arc.
Then again with 6-foot-8 Tucker Forbes roaming the paint, outside marksmanship may not be necessary.

Soccer hiatus
It happens every year.
For the next 26 days, Santa Catalina won't have a practice or game during the Christmas Holidays.
Twenty six days.
Fortunately the Cougars will go into soccer hibernation with a win.
Apparently the time off doesn't effect Santa Catalina, who has won six straight MTAL titles.

King City (5-4-1)
At the mid-point of the season, the Mustangs were struggling for a passing grade, having started the year a disappointing 0-3-1.
What followed was a 5-1 finish, in which King City averaged 42.5 points a game.
Where was this in the beginning? Especially in a 16-8 loss to Greenfield -- a team King City beat 42-7 eight weeks later in its season finale.
Slow starts have been a tradition in south county. That's got to be eliminated if King City wants to sniff the playoffs again. Final grade: B minus.

CCS meeting
I'm surprised no one presented a case similar to how the North Coast Section does their playoffs, in which a team can opt up into any division.
Meaning Palma, a Division IV school based on enrollment in the CCS, could climb to Division III or II, but not be forced into an Open Division.
If Palma had been allowed to compete in Division III this year and won it, I think it would have an even better argument for a spot in the state title game.

State bowl projections
If you believe the latest Cal-Hi Sports CIF State Bowl Game projections, Palma will not be headed to the marquee event.
Instead, it will be Marin Catholic vs. Lompoc in Division III. Of course, that could change if Marin falls in the North Coast Section Division III finals on Friday.

Palma football
Based on what was presented at the CCS meeting on Wednesday (and no decisions were final), Palma will never see Division IV again as long as it wins the league title -- which it has done 25 out of the last 28 years.
Meaning if it automatically gets bumped into the Open Division, it will never have a chance to play for a state title unless it wins the Open Division and gets a Northern California Division I regional game.
Remember, based on enrollment, Palma is a Division III school for state purposes.
And the Open spot from Northern California is always going to be De La Salle.

The most impressive team out the gates has been the 3-0 Mustangs, who have outscored three opponents by an average of 29.2 points a game.
Sarah Shepherd is averaging a double-double while returning all-league guard Jessica Davis dropped in 23 points in the opener. But we already knew about them.
Who we didn't know about is Victoria Teeter, who has become another option on the floor, leading the Mustangs in scoring. That and a defense that is allowing 30 points a game.

Carmel (12-1)
Has there ever been a program that gets less respect for having won 11 or more games three straight years?
Yeah, Palma, when it ran through the Mission Trail Athletic League from 1986 to the late 1990's.
That's what happens when you dominate a league. You become a villain.
Still, you can't ignore the fact that Carmel nearly scored 700 points this year, reaching its third straight CCS Division IV finals. Five of its games had a running clock in the fourth quarter.
There is no shame in falling to Palma. And I've got news for the rest of the MTAL. This program is not falling back to the pack anytime soon. Final grade: A.

Palma (11-1-1)
Think about this. One loss came when Palma failed on two conversation attempts in a one-point loss. A tie resulted from a missed field goal late in the game. That's how close Palma was to being 13-0.
With a team dependent on a lot of juniors this fall, I'm not sure the expectations were to produce another 10-plus win season.
Then again, this is Palma, a program with 28 straight playoff appearances, and another CCS title under its belt.
The core (35 players) will be back next year. If the CCS straightens out its playoff system, a state run is in the cards in their respective division. Final grade: A.

I understand that linemen often aren't in the spotlight. I realize your best athletes aren't linemen.
But just three offensive linemen named to the MBL first team?
Someone had to block for the seven running backs and three quarterbacks named to the first team.

Proposal on the table
A proposal will be made tonight at a CCS meeting to have a private school-public school playoff format installed for football.
How it will fly among CCS officials is open for debate
My question is if the CCS approved it, which I doubt, and it's not a state wide change, how do you decide which section champion gets placed in a division for a possible Northern California regional game next year?
You can't just assume all private schools are Division I.
Realignment
With a 10-4 vote securing the realignment changes for football next fall, gone is the Tri -County Athletic League.
Instead, there will be two equity divisions in the Monterey Bay League.
The 'A' division will consist of San Benito, Palma, Salinas, Gilroy, Alvarez, Monterey and Christopher.
The 'B' division will be Monte Vista, Seaside, Watsonville, Pajaro Valley, North County, Alisal and North Salinas.
Keep in mind that these changes are only for a year. Realignment goes up for review each year and can include up to three teams.

After dropping their first two games of the year, the Balers went eight straight weeks without suffering a loss, capturing the final Tri-County Athletic League title with a 13-12 win over Palma.
No, the Balers didn't look good in falling 36-0 to Mitty. But I attribute more of that to a hangover effect of an emotional win over Palma, and being thrown into the Open Division unexpectedly.
San Benito's defense allowed just 36 points in six TCAL games. What's scary is 32 players should be back next year. Final grade: A.

We're not going to pretend that the Coastal Athletic League is at the same level as the other four leagues in our tri-league area.

Alisal (4-6)
No doubt losing arguably their most dynamic player on both sides of the ball to a pair of concussions for a portion of the season hurt the Trojans.
Yet, for the second straight year, Alisal missed the playoffs by a half point. All six of its losses came to teams that reached the playoffs. And that's the difference in the Trojans season.
The Trojans will benefit from a move into the MBL's 'B' Division. I expect them to challenge for a title in 2012. Final grade: C.

Gilroy (4-6)
This team put up some monster offensive numbers threw the air. And for a period, it looked like that offense was going to carry the Mustangs into the playoffs behind receiver Jourdan Soares, who I felt was the best offensive player in the TCAL with 78 catches for nearly 1,500 yards.
But the defensive shortcomings caught up to Gilroy in its final four games against four playoff bound teams.
Gilroy dropped its last four games to miss the playoffs, allowing 52.3 points a game. Twice it gave up 60 or more points. Final grade: C.

Palma football
Two arguments that the CCS could make for Palma when the state bowl berths are announced on Sunday is its strength of schedule and the program's playoff history.
I don't think there is any doubt that the Chieftains would have already taken part in a Division III state title game had they not played in the CCS's Open Division.
Palma's only loss in 2010 was in the CCS playoffs. Its only two losses in 2006 were to De La Salle and Palo Alto in the CCS semifinals. Palo Alto went on to the Division I state title game.
Of course, we are talking about this year, not the past.

Alvarez boys hoops
Fast starts are nothing new for the Eagles, who won their first three games before falling in the finals of the Eagle Classic.
Last year Alvarez started the year 6-1. In 2009, it won its first five games and in 2008, it won its first eight games.
The problem is the Eagles tend to limp home once league rolls around. Last year they finished 10-13. In 2009, Alvarez was 12-13 and in 2008, it went 7-11 after the 8-0 start.

Priscilla Mora
Priscilla Mora's numbers over the first three games for North County are staggering.
The 5-foot-10 three-year starter is averaging 23.8 points, 18.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists.
There is just one problem. The Condors are still winless.
Then again, one loss was by a point and one game ended in a tie because it was in a tournament. That's a first.

Palma football
If strength of schedule has any barring on a state invitation, then Palma could have an advantage over Marin Catholic or Campolindo -- despite both being currently undefeated.
Palma is currently ranked behind Marin Catholic and ahead of Campolindo. Those two powers will face off for the North Coast Section Division III title on Friday.
Campolindo could jump ahead of Palma if it upsets Marin Catholic. Campolindo used a big second half last week to knock off previously unbeaten Cardinal Newman, who played Palma to a 10-10 tie.
Don't you wish the Northern California regional game was this year?

Final football grades II
North Salinas (1-9)
Back-to-back 1-9 seasons has North Salinas headed to the Monterey Bay League's 'B' division next fall with mixed emotions. Head coach Steve Zenk did not ask to be moved.
This could be a brief stay in the 'B' division for the Vikings, who had 16 sophomores on the varsity and could return 35 players from this year's team.
Growing pains were expected. Seven straight losses to close the season was not. So, was there enough progress to create hope for next year? Absolutely. Final Grade: C minus.

Alvarez (2-8)
The season began in nightmare fashion with lightning postponing the opener in the second quarter, which Alvarez ultimately forfeited.
What followed was losing its best running back for the season to a broken angle in Week 2. And lets not even rehash what happened in Week 3.
This was a potential playoff team that finished 2-8. What ever could go wrong did for the Eagles. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel. The freshmen team went undefeated. Final grade: C minus.

Palma football to practice
Palma will hold two practices this week in the event it gets selected to take part in the State Division III title game.
A decision won't come down until this Sunday when all section title games are completed.
Head coach Jeff Carnazzo will allow players playing winter sports to practice with their respective teams this week as well.

State bowl bid
It's not out of the question that Palma could still get the Division III state bowl bid.
But it's unlikely.
While Cardinal Newman and Escalon -- two teams ranked ahead of Palma -- were knocked out in their section semifinals, No. 1 Marin Catholic is steamrolling in the NCS.
It will face 12-0 Campolindo for the NCS title.
The game that is going to cost Palma a state berth is the 10-10 tie it played Cardinal Newman to in Week 3.

Palma-Carmel future
The Chieftains are going to be good next year. Read good. Most of that defense is coming back. And the offense might be even more potent and less predictable.
As for Carmel, Devin Pearson is not replaceable. But the Padres will be back and will win the MTAL title next year. It just might look a little different.

49ers
The 49ers can clinch their first NFC West title since 2002 with a month left in the season, with a win today over visiting 2-9 St. Louis.
Did the 49ers get a little exposed in their loss to Baltimore on Thanksgiving, or did a cross-country trip on a short week play a role in the 16-6 loss?
We know the 49ers have shortcomings on offense. But they have not run the ball well in two of their last three games. That's got to get worked out. The defense will be fine.

Carmel football
What we learned about the Padres is that they could match up with Palma.
Now I don't know if Carmel could withstand the rigors of a TCAL type schedule on a weekly basis.
But it did beat two TCAL opponents this year.
This wasn't a measuring stick for Carmel. Maybe for us it was. We were all curious.
I think we can safely say that Palma knew it was in a battle.

Palma's ground game
I can't say I'm surprised Palma went on three long scoring drives on their first three possessions to score three touchdowns and chew up over 19 minutes of the clock.
I said before the game that Carmel would have trouble stopping Palma from running the ball. Palma's offensive line just moves people. The trenches is where this game was won.

Palma-Carmel football
Would the two Carmel turnovers and missed field goal have made a difference?
Well, one turnover inside their 15-yard line led to a Palma touchdown on the ensuing play. And the field goal would have put them three points closer going into halftime.
Palma won by 12.
The missed field goal swung momentum at halftime.
Now Palma maintains a seven-point halftime lead and gets the ball to start the second half.

Cooler heads prevail
When things got a little heated in the final seconds among players, Carmel head coach Golden Anderson did the right thing when he called time out and told his defense to stand 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage as Palma took a knee.
Games don't need to end on sour notes.

Carmel-Palma finale
Say what you want about Carmel. But its performance and 35-2 record over the last three years has got your attention.
Tonight's CCS Division IV title game isn't getting all this hype just because Palma is in it. Sure it helps. But Carmel -- for better or worse -- has people talking about them in the same breath as Palma.
Remember when Seaside and Pacific Grove played for the CCS Division IV title five years ago? It didn't get half this attention. No one called it the game of the century.

CSUMB women hoops
Who ever projected the defending conference champion Otters to finish fourth this year didn't do their homework.
And that's OK. Because you've got a group of reigning champions playing with a chip on their shoulder.
CSUMB lost just two starters from last years record setting 27-4 team, while technically getting another back with Erika Ward returning from a knee injury.
Sure there are some holes to fill. The post game needs work. But the philosophy of defense first has not changed. And neither have the Otters winning ways.

Alvarez boys hoops
The Eagles are off to a 3-0 start this season behind the efforts of Michael and Ronald Turner.
The two brothers, who had been rumored to be moving and transferring to Seaside, apparently are staying put for the time being and contributing to Alvarez's fast start on the hardwood.

What I'd like to see
Not a shootout?
Instead, I want to see a game with big plays from big players. I want to see an unknown step up. I want to see a game come down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Carmel's explosive offense in a two-minute drill against Palma's dynamic defense. I want to see the game come down to one play, leaving us all holding our breaths.

Coin toss tonight
There is a good chance who ever wins the coin toss in tonight's CCS Division IV final between Palma and Carmel will defer to the second half.
But is that wise?
If I'm Carmel, I think I take the ball and make a statement with an offense that has averaged 55.2 points a game. Don't wait until the second half.
If I'm Palma, I might want to take the air out of Carmel early by establishing one of its typical 10-play, six-minute drives.

Saturday's title pick
Carmel (12-0) vs. Palma (10-1-1) at MPC, 7 p.m.
I've said for the last three years that Carmel can play with anyone for one game. Nothing has changed my mind. Devin Pearson is the best athlete on the field. He'll make things happen for the Padres. Averaging 55.2 points a game isn't by accident this fall. But... and you knew this was coming, Palma is a different animal -- more like a beast on defense. Those traps that Carmel runs so effectively won't be as efficient. I don't see this as a shootout. And that clearly favors Palma and its ground control, time consuming drives. Pick: Palma.

King City girls basketball
I picked the Mustangs to win the MTAL title a month ago and they did nothing to change my mind after a season opening 26-point win.
The Mustangs have one of the top shooting guards in the area in Jessica Davis, as well as three players in the paint that stand 5-10 or taller, including returning all-leaguer Sarah Shepherd.
