Palma denied

Campolindo received the Division III bid out of Northern California and will face Washington Union of Fresno for the state title on Saturday at noon at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
It is believed that the decision came down to Campolindo and Palma.

Campo should be favored over WU. WU got in for Central Section because Bakersvield didn't get n in my opinion. Lompoc was a way better D3 team (stronger schedule and defeated SS D2 champ Arroyo Grande). Palma losing to Cardinal Newman which Campo defeated decisively was the main reason why the Chieftain didn't get picked.

I've said for the last three weeks that the tie was going to come back to haunt Palma. But what a magical season for Campolindo.

Yes...Campo defeated undefeated Marin Catholic with field goal woith 2 seconds left. Magical season. I hear Cardinal newman and Palma series won't be renewed. Will be interesting next season. Palma should get the 1-3 seed in all of CCS next season.

No Cardinal Newman-Palma next year. The NCS is moving their league season up a week because of the Nor Cal regional game. Look for Palma and Seaside to meet in Week 3.

Was St Joes renewed? Doesn't seem will be a good game next season.

I believe St. Francis and St. Joseph are Games 1 and 2 next year again.

Can someone explain to me why there is no state football playoff in CA. This high school version of the BCS is crap. Teams like Palma have a great season and all they have within their control is a sectional championship?! Ridiculous. It's unfair to the kids not have the opportunity to play for a state title on the field. If geography is the issue, Texas is comparable in size to California. Texas has a state playoff from 6-man all the way up to Super 5A.

There are 10 sections throughout the state in CIF each with voting authority. The section playoffs are a huge revenue source for each section and many won't vote for a playoff format that disrupts their sections (many teams in playoffs), and many don't want to extend the season beyond what it is. The bowl was a way to start the evolution to a playoff. Next year their is a regional play--in game and all the participating sections will need to alighn their play-oofs to end a week before the play-in. Most in northern CA are aligned with exception of North Coast Section (DLS'ssection) which will start the season earlier and end a week earlier to align. After that, hopefully more alignment will occur with maybe another bracket added. At some point we can have a pretty good state tournament. CCS needs to get its act together as far as alignment which is a questionmark, or else CCS teams will be at a disadvantage in terms of getting teams in except for one divivon. In short, the playoff and format need to be voted on and approved by the 10 sections which all have different priorities.

Every southern section playoff title game was shown on television in their region. The sport has become just as big in California as it is in Texas. It's time for changes.

John, I think in pockets of the state it's true that football is as big as it is in Texas. I think as you correctly state in SOCAL that this is true. But I've officiated football for a number of years in small towns in west Texas. In a 1A town of say nearly 3,000 people, nearly everyone is there. It's crazy. I don't think we can say the same for our local area, even as popular has football's become.

NorCal, it's almost a perfect analogy. We don't have a playoff in FBS because of money. What's the reason in CA?..$$$.

Southern Section actually voted against the state bowl. As much a nightmare it is to get the CCS aligned, it is a magnitude more difficult to get the bowl. It's been a process. I remember in the 90's all the proposals and they kept being put on the shelf. Finally the bowl got though with the SJ-Sac section playing a big role. Central section was for it and it's been not until this year they got a lower divivpn D3 team in the bowl...the foirst central section team in the state bowl since the great Bakersfield teams decades ago.

$$$ in the sections is one reason as mentioned and also many of the commissioners are teachers/ex-teachers and view more football as too long a season.

As far as a big sport- you still get bigger live audiences in Texas and I've watched many of their games on TV as well. Texas and Florida are stoill states where the sport is more popular. Texas is way more popular. Where in CA do you see a high school football coach as the higheest paid person in a town?

Good points,
We'll never see 30,000 in Cali for a high school football game. But we are seeing more radio and television coverage of high school football in the golden state.
