Boys volleyball tournament
Eight teams from around the central coast will take part Saturday at 8 a.m. in the Carmel Volleyball Classic.
Among the teams competing in the tournament is SAC Joaquin Section power Bullard of Fresno, who comes into the tournament the favorite at 18-4 this season.
Carmel, who is ranked No. 15 in the Central Coast Section behind hitters Jared McNally and Keegan Forrester, has won 18 straight league matches.
Also taking part in the tournament is Willow Glen of San Jose and much-improved Palma, who used 18 kills from Nate Levitt on Thursday to knock off Christopher in five sets.

Injuries derail county sprinters
With Santa Catalina sprinter Mikayla Revera likely out until late April with a left hamstring injury, the county's sprint core has been somewhat depleted by injuries.
Reigning Central Coast Section 400 meter champion Zack Miller of Pacific Grove was lost for the year after suffering a hematoma in his left thigh in the CCS basketball playoffs.
What was first thought to be a four-week healing process was extended to 12 weeks, ending hopes of Miller defending his section title.
Miller, who was also among the top returning sprinters in the 200 and long jump in the CCS, will be back on the track in 2018 at Harvard University.
Revera currently has the top marks in the section in the 100 and 200. But the senior has been to the state meet the last two years in the 400.
That's likely out of the question as she is expected to miss at least four weeks of training. Revera has a track scholarship to Sacramento State.

Palma-San Benito baseball
Was it a statement for San Benito or a wake-up call for Palma?
How about both.
The Chieftains are no longer undefeated while San Benito will take an 11-game winning streak into today's rematch in Hollister.
Palma, who came into Thursday's showdown having allowed just six runs in its first 13 games, gave up seven in the second inning alone and 14 for the game.
The fact that these teams play three times in Gabilan Division play makes today's game even more significant.
A San Benito wins pads its lead to two. If Palma gains a measure of redemption, the two teams are even with one more showdown looming in three weeks.
I doubt Thursday's result changes the mindset of either team. But it does put a little more pressure on the Chieftains, who face a San Benito team that is undefeated at home this year.
In fact, the Balers last home loss came to Palma last spring.
Last year Palma lost its first meeting to the Balers, then won the next two to win the league title. Of course, San Benito got the last laugh with a win in the Open Division playoffs.
Sam Stoutenborough is expected to start on the mound for Palma against Davonte Butler.

Chris Dalman
Apparently some retired hacks still crave the spotlight.
Chris Dalman's decision to step down as an assistant football coach at Palma isn't so he can take a job with the Seattle Seahawks.
While the former 49ers center-guard does know Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and offensive line coach Tom Cable, he is not moving to Seattle.
Dalman told me his reasons for stepping down are simple. After 40 years as either a player or coach at the youth, high school, college and NFL level, he wants a break.
Will he return?
It's possible. But not in the NFL. At least not in the near future. Working 17 hour days is not high on his interest level.
Plus Dalman just bought a house on the peninsula and he'd like to watch his son Drew play over the next four years at Stanford.
In the meantime, Dalman will continue his job as an administrator at Palma

San Benito-Palma baseball
There are few games at the midpoint of the season that get your attention.
This one does.
It's not just a battle of 8-0 teams in the Gabilan Division that will square off.
These are clearly the two best teams in the tri-region area.
The Chieftains and their 13-0 record will host a San Benito squad that has rattled off 10 straight wins since a season opening loss to Valley Christian.
Palma's pitching staff, anchored by Cal bound Sam Stoutenborough, has been filthy through its first 13 games, having allowed four earned runs -- three in one game.
The staff, which posted six straight shutouts at one point, has combined for nine shutouts, including Eziah Cortez's blanking of Monterey on Tuesday.
At the plate, the defending Gabilan Division champion Chieftains come at you with a top-to-bottom lineup that can hit, led by Danny Carnazzo, Dominic Scattini and Cortez.
The Balers have been shutting down teams behind the arms of Davonte Butler and Tyler Triano. At the plate, returning all-leaguers Drew Williams and Diego Fisher are tough outs.
Since giving up 14 runs in that non-league season opening loss, the Balers pitching staff has allowed eight runs during its 10-game winning streak.
Last season San Benito won the first meeting before Palma captured the final two to strip the league title from them.

Foothill-MPC softball
No one has put together a better stretch in their last 10 games than the surging Lobos, who are 9-1 during that span.
Sitting a game off the pace in the Coast Conference South Division to rival Hartnell, the Lobos will face a Foothill squad that has won 21 game this season and is a game out in the North Conference.
Four players are hitting over .400 for MPC, including Seaside product Marielle Tuazon, who arrived late from the basketball team without skipping a beat, hitting .483.
Carmel grad Lauren Salvati is spraying the ball around at a .481 clip, with a team high 39 hits and 15 walks, compiling a .585 on base percentage.
North Salinas product Serena Castaneda is hitting .475, having driven in a team high 32 runs while ripping four bombs for the Lobos, while Malia Usrey is hitting .422 with 30 runs batted in.
Pitching has been a strength for the Lobos as one time North Salinas High head coach and Northern Illinois assistant Keith Berg has found a pair of gems in Sally Bowles and Shayla Castaneda.
Bowles has been the ace at 14-3 with a 1.27 earned run average, while Castaneda is 7-2 with a 2.12 ERA.
Berg has built himself a program in just his second season as 11 of the 12 players on the roster are freshmen.

Pacific Grove-Santa Catalina softball
Two programs that appear to be hitting their stride at the right time will clash today in a battle for supremacy in the Mission Trail Athletic League.
The Breakers are riding a five-game winning streak while Santa Catalina has rattled off four straight wins, each producing over 20 runs in lopsided wins on Tuesday.
Five years removed from pitching the Cougars to the programs first Central Coast Section Division III title, Alex Pingree is back as the head coach.
While the Cougars have a new cast on the field, Pingree is getting similar results as Abby Gunter has ripped five homers while driving in 19 runs in the teams first eight games.
Gunter is also dealing in the circle, having picked up the teams first two wins in league play. Support at the plate has come from Jessica Clements, who is coming off a five-hit effort.
The Breakers welcomed back Danielle Pasquariello from an injury that cut short her basketball year, as she had five hits, including two homers on Tuesday.
The juniors power only adds to Pacific Grove's potent lineup that includes Samantha Crowley and Diana Hughes.
Two of Pacific Grove's three non-league losses this spring have come from Watsonville and Notre Dame, who are a combined 23-1.

Carmel-Soledad baseball
You would think an 11-1 start would warrant more attention.
Yet, the argument in Soledad's fast start is who have they played?
Does it matter?
We'll find out today when it hosts defending Mission Trail Athletic League champion Carmel.
Last year the Aztecs started the league season 5-0 and got humbled in two games by Carmel 14-2 and 9-1, never really recovering.
Which makes this game big for Soledad. It's beaten Carmel just once in its last six meetings, and that was at home.
The Padres have rattled off four straight league wins since dropping their first two MTAL games to unbeaten Greenfield.
Wes Noble is coming off a three-hit effort in Carmel's win over Stevenson while Christian Stapleton and Ben Weber have combined for eight homers.
Isaac and Adrian Lopez have ignited a potent Soledad offense while Chris Villarreal has been the ace on the mound, as well as leading the team in runs batted in.
Villarreal has struck out nine in each of his last two starts, with one game only going five innings.

State Northern California Division IV Finals
Saturday's game
No. 3 St. Patrick-St. Vincent, Vallejo (26-7) at No. 1 Palma (25-4), 6 p.m.
For Palma coach Kelley Lopez, it comes down to one thing tonight.
"Composure,'' Lopez said.
A return trip to the State Division IV finals won't occur if the Chieftains get caught up in the Bruins up-tempo, track meet type pace.
In three Northern California games, the Bruins have averaged 83.2 points a game, with the average margin of victory being 42 points, including an 18-point win over No. 2 seed Lick-Wilmerding.
"This team is extremely athletic,'' Lopez said. "It's a program that likes to use its speed and make the game hectic.''
Lopez compared St. Patrick-St. Vincent to Pittsburg and Monterey with their athleticism - two teams that Palma defeated this year.
However, there is one significant difference.
"This team has a post presence,'' Lopez said.
Lopez was referring to St. Patrick-St. Vincent 6-foot-4 post Tavian Henderson, who averaged nearly 17 points a game this season, creating havoc in the paint.
The Bruins also have two dynamic guards in B.J. Standely and Marquel Johnson, who are averaging a combined 28.9 points a game this year.
"We've watched film of them,'' Lopez said. "It's something we're not afraid off.''
Not when you have the reigning two-time Gabilan Division Player of the Year in your backcourt in Jamaree Bouyea.
The senior scored the games last five points in Palma's five-point win over Central Catholic. On the season, Bouyea is averaging nearly 19 points a game.
Yet, it's been his ability to distribute the ball that has kept the Chieftains season alive. Guard Nikhil Manimaram has lite opponents in the tournament, averaging over 20 points a game.
Contributions from 6-5 Garrett Maker and 6-4 Cameron Jones in the paint have given opponents something else to think about when stopping the Chieftains.

St. Patrick-St. Vincent-Palma basketball
State Northern California Division IV Finals
Saturday's game
No. 3 St. Patrick-St. Vincent, Vallejo (26-7) at No. 1 Palma (25-4), 6 p.m.
The Bruins have had little trouble through their first three games of the state tournament, having beaten their opponents by 74, 35 and 18 points.
The big one for St. Patrick-St. Vincent was avenging a North Coast Section title game loss to Lick-Wilmerding in the semifinals last Tuesday, posting a 73-55 win.
That came on the road, where the Bruins will be Saturday against the reigning Northern California Division IV champion Chieftains, who held off Central Catholic to advance to the finals.
Palma's road hasn't been as cushy as St Patrick-St. Vincent's, as it's had to battle to knock off Menlo and Central Catholic.
An argument can be made that the Chieftains are battled tested. It won't hurt that the game is home, where Palma has won 36 straight home games.

Seaside-Alisal baseball
With wins over the two most prolific teams in the Pacific Division since the league was formed, the Trojans have gotten opponents' attention.
The same can be said for a youthful Seaside squad, who despite a roster with six freshmen, also has a win over preseason favorite Watsonville.
One of them will be in first place after Friday's battle at Alisal.
The Trojans made an early season statement, ending a 14-game losing streak to reigning three-time league champion North Salinas, beating them twice.
Alisal (3-1) split its two-game series with Watsonville, as did the Spartans.
Pitching and timely hitting has carried the Trojans, as Sal Lopez tossed five innings of relief in a win over Watsonville last Wednesday.
Ruben Gomez and Raul Garnica have sprayed the ball all over the field, having combined for 20 hits in the teams first nine overall games.
After being no-hit by Watsonville in the first meeting, the Spartans showed that they have short-term memory, bouncing back with 10 hits in a 7-3 win in the second meeting.
Tristian Beza, the lone senior for Seaside, has driven in a team high six runs, with RBI in three of the teams first four games. He's also tossed two complete games on the mound.
Daniel Sayre tossed a gem in the Spartans win over Watsonville, and has a team high seven hits. Freshman Tristan Trotter has hit safely in three of the teams four games.

Monterey-Carmel volleyball
The defending league champion Padres have quietly rattled off 15 straight league wins over the last two years -- 11 of which have been by sweeps.
Monterey is an emotional game for Camel head coach Israel Ricardez, since it's where he honed his own skills as a player and later a coach.
Carmel is playing at another level right now behind 6-foot-5 Jared McNally and Keegan Forrester, who have combined for 138 kills.
The Padres have run a 5-2 attack behind setters Charlie DeLapa and Ezra Delbick. Yet, Ricardez hopes to go with a 6-2 once Ben Airola's shoulder heels.
The respect Carmel has gathered is evident in its schedule, as it was invited to compete this weekend in the Dos Pueblos Invitational at UC Santa Barbara.
Don't sleep on Monterey, who has four returning players from last year's squad, having dropped a five-set match to Palma on Tuesday.

Notre Dame softball
Just once in the Spirits illustrious softball history has the program started the season 11-0.
That year Notre Dame set a single-season school record with 31 wins in opening the spring with 22 straight wins.Notre Dame is halfway to that record setting start.
Can we draw comparisons to that 2004 squad that ended up 31-1?
That would be unfair as the 2004 team featured four Division I softball players, not to mention a DIAA volleyball player.
Still, this is as impressive of a start as we have seen on the diamond.
Oh, there's no doubt that this current squad will have a handful of players play college softball as well.
Apparently others have taken note of Notre Dame's dynamic start.
MaxPreps has Notre Dame ranked No. 6 in the state and No. 30 in the nation after posting wins over perennial state powers Mitty and St. Francis of Mountain View.
Yes, the Spirits have been battle tested.
Vanessa Gonzalez is now a polished junior hurler, not the freshmen that pitched the Spirits to a CCS Division III title two years ago.
The lineup is stacked with a pair of four year starters in Aly Gomonet and Spencer Hyosaka, And it has some power in the heart of the lineup.
You don't want to look to far into the crystal ball. The Gabilan Division is deep. But awaiting Notre Dame in 25 days is reigning Gabilan Division champion San Benito.
The Spirits were 22-0 in 2004 before falling 1-0 on the road to San Benito.

Stevenson-Greenfield baseball
No doubt, beating Carmel in its Mission Trail Athletic League opener was a signature win for the Bruins -- in part because the program was 0-36 lifetime against the reigning league champs.
Duplicating the feat 48 hours later, however, was a statement for a program that truly believes it can contend for supremacy in a balanced league
This has been a process that Bruins coach Ray Green has been building, getting players to dedicate themselves to being a part of the solution.
But it's just two games into an 18 game season. Now comes another pop quiz as Greenfield will visit undefeated Stevenson.
A late start has not hurt the Pirates, who have outscored their first two opponents 22-0 behind hot hitting Daniel Garrett and slugger Andrew Prince, who has driven in five runs.
Prince also tossed a gem in Stevenson's last game while Taylor Balestrieri-Jennings recorded 10 strikeouts in a season opening win over Marina.
Greenfield has manufactured runs in league play, while relying on the pitching of JJ Rodriguez and Tony Castro.
The Bruins strong start shouldn't be a complete shock. They challenged for a playoff spot last year before dropping two of their final three MTAL games.
And Greenfield is battle tested this spring, having been involved in three straight games decided by one run.
Duplicating the feat 48 hours later, however, was a statement for a program that truly believes it can contend for supremacy in a balanced league

Central Catholic-Palma basketball
State Northern California Division IV Semifinals
Tuesday's game
Central Catholic, Modesto (26-7) at Palma (24-4), 7 p.m.
The target is on the Chieftains back this year as the two teams get reacquainted in a rematch of last season's semifinals.
The underdogs on the road last year, Palma went to Modesto and ended the Raiders season 66-59 in what head coach Kelley Lopez called arguably the best game his squad played all season.
Palma will need another big effort against a Central Catholic squad that has rattled off 11 straight wins, including the SAC Joaquin Section championships.
The Raiders have the distinction of beating Half Moon Bay 70-54 Saturday to reach the semifinals. Palma split a pair of games with Half Moon Bay back in December.
As dynamic as two-time Gabilan Division Most Valuable Player Jamaree Bouyea has been for Palma all season, Nikhil Manimaram is averaging 24 points a game in the Nor Cal tournament.
Despite playing with two badly sprained fingers in his right hand, Manimaram hit the games final 11 points last Saturday against Menlo, finishing with a season high 30.
While Manimaram was icing his fingers last Saturday in the third quarter, Garrett Maker stepped up with six clutch points to keep Palma in command.
Five players are averaging over 10 points a game for Central Catholic, including Jarred Rice at 15.8, while 6-foot-5 Coner Felton is dropping in 11.1 points and pulling down 10.3 rebounds a game.
The Raiders have scored 80 or more points in six of their last nine games, while Palma is averaging 75 points a game in the Northern California playoffs.
The Chieftains will take a 35 game home winning streak into the semifinals.

Monterey-Vanden boys hoops
State Northern California Division III quarterfinals
Saturday's game
No. 7 Monterey (25-3) at No. 3 Vanden, Fairfield (28-3), 7:30 p.m.
The Viking have impressive credentials coming into the quarterfinals meeting, having won 28 games this year to earn a No. 42 ranking in the state among all divisions.
Runner-ups in the SAC Joaquin Section finals, Vanden and the Toreadores both opened the season with 17 game winning streaks.
Vanden cruised to a 71-32 win over Pleasant Valley while Monterey rallied from a five-point deficit in the final minute to force overtime in a 63-57 win over Miramonte.
The Toreadores have struggled at times against teams with size and Vanden has plenty of it with six players standing over 6-feet-4, including 6-6 Lorenzo Washington.
Monterey showed a lot of poise in the final two minutes and in overtime in seizing control of a game that Miramonte appeared to have locked up.
Getting out and pushing the tempo and making that extra pass are critical for the Toreadores against a team like Vanden, who relies on a high percentage shot in the paint.
Kobe Ordonio continues to play each game like it's his last, averaging over 25 points in the playoffs. Austin White has come off the bench and been a big contributor for the Toreadores.

North Salinas-Palma track
The reigning five-time Gabilan Division champion Chieftains will begin defense of their track and field title, hosting North Salinas this afternoon.
For the Chieftains, redemption could be on their minds as North Salinas knocked them off in a dual meet last spring, one of just two teams to have beaten Palma over the last five years.
Palma is deep in a number of events, including the sprints, where Emilio Martinez and Kevin Telford are back. Both were members of the CCS finalist 400 relay team last year.
Telford, a Gabilan Division 400 meter champion, has been spending time in practice working on the 300 intermediate hurdles as well.
Martinez, who rushed for over 2,500 yards last fall, will find North Salinas' Justin Robante in the 100 meters.
An event of interest includes the discus where North Salinas' Fabian Hunkin and the Chieftains Drew Dalman are among the elite in the Central Coast Section
.Last spring Dalman won the Gabilan Division title, but Hunkin rebounded and qualified for state.
A strength for Palma is the distance events where sophomores Sam Lavarato and Tommy Padilla both went to the state meet in cross country last fall.
Both will be pushed by Gabilan Division cross country champion Brandon Gutierrez, who will be one of the favorites in both the 1,600 and 3,200.

Miramonte-Monterey boys hoops
State Northern California Division III Tournament
Wednesday's game
No. 11 Miramonte, Orinda, (16-12) vs. No. 7 Monterey (24-3) at CSU-Monterey Bay, 7 p.m.
The Toreadores can't be too pleased about having their game moved six miles up the coast to CSU-Monterey Bay.
Granted, it's a nicer facility. But Monterey's century old gym is clearly a home court advantage. Then again, two of its three losses this season came on the ancient court.
Emotions spilled out after the Toreadores won the programs first ever Central Coast Section Division III title last week.
Now comes the hard part. Refocusing for a potential run in the state tournament. Kobe Ordonio was possessed in the CCS playoffs with 29 and 34 point efforts.
The fab four in sophomores Mohammed Adam, Evans Charles, Tahjae Ordonio and Mohanid Adam all lived up to the hype in the postseason with valuable contributions.
The Matadors are just 4-5 in their last nine games, falling in the North Coast Section playoffs. They do have size that could present problems for Monterey.
Team captain Charlie Hocking stands 6-foot-7 while teammate Sam Foster is 6-5. Monterey offset Saratoga's size in the CCS title game with an aggressive defense.
This is just Monterey's second appearance in the State Northern California playoffs, and its first in 27 years.

West Valley-Palma boys hoops
State Northern California Division IV Tournament
Wednesday's game
No. 16 West Valley, Cottonwood (18-11) at No. 1 Palma (22-4), 7 p.m.
We know the road back to the state championship will go through Palma as the defending Northern California champions have home court advantage throughout the tournament.
The Chieftains are 11-0 at home this year and have rattled off 22 straight wins dating back to 2015. All 11 wins this winter at home have been by 12 or more points.
Like last season, the Chieftains come into the tournament having dropped two games in the Central Coast Section Open Division Tournament.
West Valley has relied heavily this winter on 6-foot-6 Pim Lewis, who is averaging 17 points and nearly 10 rebounds a game.
All-league post Cameron Jones will likely draw the assignment of containing Lewis. Jones has been regarded as a defensive demon for the Chieftains.
Two-time Gabilan Division Most Valuable Player Jamaree Bouyea has lived up to the hype this year for Palma, leading the team in points, assists and steals.
Help has surfaced in shooting guard Nikhil Manimaram, who has evolved into one of the top 3-point shooters in the section.
