Monterey-Vanden boys hoops

State Northern California Division III quarterfinals
Saturday's game
No. 7 Monterey (25-3) at No. 3 Vanden, Fairfield (28-3), 7:30 p.m.
The Viking have impressive credentials coming into the quarterfinals meeting, having won 28 games this year to earn a No. 42 ranking in the state among all divisions.
Runner-ups in the SAC Joaquin Section finals, Vanden and the Toreadores both opened the season with 17 game winning streaks.
Vanden cruised to a 71-32 win over Pleasant Valley while Monterey rallied from a five-point deficit in the final minute to force overtime in a 63-57 win over Miramonte.
The Toreadores have struggled at times against teams with size and Vanden has plenty of it with six players standing over 6-feet-4, including 6-6 Lorenzo Washington.
Monterey showed a lot of poise in the final two minutes and in overtime in seizing control of a game that Miramonte appeared to have locked up.
Getting out and pushing the tempo and making that extra pass are critical for the Toreadores against a team like Vanden, who relies on a high percentage shot in the paint.
Kobe Ordonio continues to play each game like it's his last, averaging over 25 points in the playoffs. Austin White has come off the bench and been a big contributor for the Toreadores.
