North County (6-17, 0-12)
Four years after posting an undefeated league season in the old Pacific Division, the Condors went in the opposite direction last winter in going winless in the Gabilan Division.
Graduation gutted the program. The Gabilan Division is not where you want to be when your team is in transition.
"This group of seniors is out to prove that they're better than last year's 0-12 record indicated," North County second year coach Patrick Kilty said.
It won't hurt that the Condors have been moved to the Cypress Division this season, where they are expected to be a contender.
"A new league brings some unfamiliar faces," Kilty said. "We're looking forward to competing at a high level."
It was trial by fire for Kilty as well last year in his first season. A former North County standout, he has had a full season to implement his game plan.
With an understanding of the system and the core of his roster back, the Condors don't have that look of bewilderment on their faces.
Kilty has plenty of parts to play with, starting with Dulian Morales, who lead the team in scoring last winter.
Joseph Bertao is back and roaming around the floor and running the offense, while Brandon Ducusin as another scoring option for North County.
"Joseph is the catalyst to our offense," Kilty said. "He's one of the better athletes. Brandon is a great defender and a scoring threat from anywhere on the floor."
For instinct offense, Kilty can look to Isaiah Solario, who is among the top 3-point shooters in the area. In addition, Abel Ruiz provides tenacious defense.
"He's my dirty work player," Kilty said.
While he'll have to wait for Monte Vista transfer Cyrus Coefelt until January because of the transfer rule, Kilty believes he will be a big help when league play begins.
Meaning missing the postseason last year for the first time in five years may be brief.
