Friday's game
Monte Vista (0-3) at Soledad (0-4), 7:30 p.m.
It's not so much the shock that both programs are a combined 0-7 going into Mission Division play as much as how each has been outplayed this fall.
The Mustangs have been outscored 89-28 while defending Mission Trail Athletic League champion Soledad has been rocked 137-31.
Granted two of Monte Vista and Soledad's losses are to two 'A' league teams. Both also have losses to reigning Central Coast Section Divisional champions.
Taking it a step further, the combine record of the four teams Soledad has fallen to are 10-3 while the Mustangs three losses are to teams a combined 7-2.
Yet outside of Monte Vista's three-point loss to Christopher and the Aztecs two-point heartbreaker to Gilroy, neither team has looked right.
You can point to the first quarter as a starting point for both teams' misfortunes. Soledad has been outscored 52-0 in the first 12 minutes while the Mustangs have outscored 28-0.
The Aztecs do possess one of the premier receivers and perhaps all-around athletes in the league in Angel Olivas, who has caught at least one touchdown pass in three of the teams four games.
Injuries have plagued Soledad, as well as eight turnovers. Monte Vista hasn't started a year 0-4 since 2004. It's been 11 years since the Aztecs opened a season 0-4.
