I'd say Seaside is getting that long overdue respect it has coveted.
The reigning Central Coast Section Medium School champion Spartans are the only team in Monterey County to earn a Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Top 20 ranking at No. 20.
In fact, Seaside is one of just five teams from the Central Coast Section ranked in the Open Division, joining West Catholic Athletic League powers Valley Christian, Bellarmine and Mitty, as well as Milpitas.
Seaside is also ranked No. 2 in the Northern California Division III rankings, just ahead of No. 3 and CCS Small Division champion Carmel.
I'm not sure the thinking in ranking Palma No. 5 in Division III.
St. Francis Catholic of Watsonville, who will host Carmel on Friday, is ranked No. 9 in Division IV.
All divisions are based on enrollments.
