The longest Central Coast Section girls playoff run for any sport is over.
King City is not going to the postseason this year for the first time since 1983.
When a team doesn't finish in the top two in its respective league for volleyball, a point system decides its fate. Fair or not, it works.
The Mustangs may have hurt themselves by playing a strong non-league schedule. But the objective was to get better, not pad its record. I applaud that.
During King City's run, it won 17 Mission Trail Athletic League titles. At one point, it captured 114 straight league matches.
The Mustangs won a CCS Division II title and reached the State Division II finals in 1990 -- the only volleyball team in Monterey County to achieve that feat.
This is not the end of an era, just a streak.
