Seven turnovers.
Need I say more?
North Salinas' defense intercepted Gilroy quarterbacks six times Friday, returning two for touchdowns. Coming into the game, highly touted quarterback Jamie Jensen had tossed just seven picks all season.
If there was one thing that boggled my mind, it was Gilroy taking Jensen out for a couple of plays on three separate series' and letting Nick Marra throw an ill-advised pass or two.
It's almost as if Gilroy panicked a little with its decision making. Even with five minutes left in the game, it was still a two score game.
It wasn't so much the turnovers that decided the game as it was what North Salinas did with them. The Vikings produced 28 points off of four turnovers — the last three turnovers of the game accounted for 21 points in five minutes.
And now the Vikings are one win away from gathering no worse than a share of their first league title since 1983. And Gilroy's dreams of playing for a state title and going undefeated are gone.
