A certain columnist once said Carmel coach John Ables may have lost a few brains cells in his youth.
That was a decade ago.
I'm sure a few more have disappeared since.
But I marvel at the man for being able to put one championship team after another together. You may not agree with all of his methods. But you have to respect his track record.
Carmel won its 11th straight girls cross country title Thursday -- by 46 points. The boys captured their 11th in 12 years -- by 40 points.
All seven of his boys runners set personal records. Which is what you want at this stage of the season.
If you count his track and field titles, Ables has 46 boys and girls MTAL championships.
That's a icon.
