The San Diego Chargers naming of Ron Rivera as their defensive coordinator Tuesday afternoon to replace the fired Ted Cottrell could put the one-time Seaside High standout a step closer to becoming an NFL head coach.
Rivera, who interviewed for seven head coaching vacancies in 2006 while a defensive coordinator for the Super Bowl bound Chicago Bears, was a finalist for the Chargers job before becoming their linebackers coach.
Promoting Rivera in the middle of the season might seem like a desperate move for the Chargers, who sit at 3-5 at the halfway point of the NFL season.
Yet, in looking back at Rivera's past, his defenses with the Bears were the top ranked in the NFC in 2005 and 2006.
A Super Bowl pick by several publications before the year started, if San Diego doesn't turn it around, Rivera could be a perfect choose to replace head coach Norv Turner.
