Monterey showed up on The Sporting News' 400 best sports cities list, finishing 310.
How?
What does it have to even be on this list?
Probably more than you think. Sure, there's no professional franchise or minor league team, and no major college sports program.
But the peninsula does have the annual AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am - a PGA tour event that Tiger Woods refuses to play in - the World Super Bikes at Laguna Seca and the 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend. Oh, and CSU-Monterey Bay has played UCLA and Fresno State in hoops.
Yeah, I agree. So what.
But when you break down 400 cities, the pickings get slim after 100. Monterey actually finished ahead of California rivals Napa, San Bernardino, Modesto, Adelanto, Lancaster and Rancho Cucamonga.
And Stanford's men's basketball team is slated to open its practice in Monterey this week. Go figure.
