Friday's game
Santa Cruz (1-1) at Pacific Grove (0-2), 7:30 p.m.
Ignore that 2-8 record from last season. This looks more like the Santa Cruz team that won a share of a league title in 2017.
The Cardinals are a much improved unit, having defeated Gilroy from the Gabilan Division, before suffering a four-point loss to Scott Valley of the Mission Division.
Don't be mislead by Pacific Grove's start. Its losses have come from two reigning league champions, in which it scored first in both games.
The problem for the Breakers has been the second quarter, where they have been outscored 35-7 in both setbacks.
Parker McAnally has made an imprint in Pacific Grove's first two games with a pair of touchdown catches from Ben Minik, while chalking up nearly 80 rushing yards.
The Breakers have got to stop digging themselves into a hole at halftime. It's not an offense geared for flashy comebacks. Minimizing its mistakes is crucial in turning their season around.
Last fall Pacific Grove posted a 30-12 win over Santa Cruz when both were members of the Cypress Division. The Breakers were dropped to the Santa Lucia Division this year.
