Pitman-Monterey football

Friday's game
Pitman, Turlock (0-3) vs. Monterey (2-1) at Pacific Grove, 7:30 p.m.
The good news for Pitman is it got on the scoreboard last week for the first time all year. Of course, it also gave up 63 points in a 53 point pasting.
The winless record, however, is somewhat misleading as the combined record of the opponents it has faced this year is 10-1.
Last season the Pride -- the alma mater of former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick - were 10-2 in reaching the SAC Joaquin Section semifinals.
Current Pitman quarterback Landyn Magina is effective when rolling out and dumping passes off in the flat. He extends plays and has shown the ability to tuck and run.
The Toreadores ran into one of the top teams in Northern California last week in succumbing 41-0 to Marin Catholic.
Regaining that confidence starts in protecting the quarterback, giving Josh Elmore more time to pick apart defenses. Turnovers were a throne in Monterey's side last week.
Monterey can expect to see more Cover 2 type defensive schemes until it can move the ball on the ground more effectively.
Tightening up the special teams is critical. In addition to a 78 yard kickoff return to open the game, the Toreadores gave up chunks of yardage on punt returns.
