King City football

Depth charts are usually two deep, perhaps three if you have the numbers.
Few teams have four players for one position.
The Mustangs were no exception. Yet, when you lose three tailbacks in two weeks to injuries - two during a game, the school hallways aren't an option.
At the same time, you can't abandoned a part of your offense. Drawing straws wasn't an option. Yet, King City coach Mac Villanueva needed a tailback.
 Institutions do count.
Moving Alex Valdez to the position was out of necessity. Now it appears the junior will be there on a permanent basis when his teammates return.
Valdez chalked up close to 200 rushing yards and four touchdowns in his debut as a starter in a 28-6 win over Santa Cruz.
A dire situation a week earlier may have become the Mustangs strength in the Cypress Division, as Valdez showed off his vision, instincts and speed.
Two weeks earlier, Valdez was in the slot position for King City, having recorded negative yards in his only carry.
Now he has a prominent role on a team with expectations of ending an 11 year playoff drought. In an injury filled season, Valdez has brought live and momentum back into the program.
It's not a coincidence that King City's defense looked reborn. When you're taking care of the ball and controlling it on offense, the defense is more rested and aggressive.
We will learn more about the Mustangs in the next three weeks as their next three opponents are a combined 11-2. But who carries the ball won't be a concern.
