Salinas football

It was subtly mentioned after Friday's win. The emotion of beating Palma had already been put in the rear view mirror.
Someone yelled over to Salinas coach Steve Zenk and asked 'how about 11 straight this year'?
It's amazing how you can squash a few doubters when you beat Palma.
Two weeks ago the Cowboys were winless and outplayed by Carmel and Clovis - two teams that are a combined 8-1.
Even Zenk acknowledged that he questioned some of his decisions. What was never questioned was the heart of his players.
Going on the road and shutting out Milpitas two weeks ago in a rematch of last year's Central Coast Section Open Division I title game put Salinas in the same position as last year at 1-2.
 Well sort of.
True, Salinas was 1-2 going into its Gabilan Division opener in 2017. But it was coming off a loss to Milpitas in its final non-league game.
What transpired was a single-season school record 10 game winning streak - including snapping a 14 year losing streak to Palma, which is now a two-game winning streak.
Which is where the conversation of 11 straight wins came up. Granted, there is a long ways to go in the season. It would be premature to assume.
Lets not forget Aptos is undefeated, not to mention San Benito, two teams Salinas faces in the final two weeks of the season. But there are similarities to the path Salinas has taken.
It has a quarterback in Carl Richardson that clearly connected with his receivers in the Cowboys win over Palma. That was lethal.
The defense has not allowed a point in the second half in its last two games. And the offensive line is controlling the tempo.
If Salinas can knock off the 100 plus yards in penalties, the potential to produce points is frightening.
