Gilroy-Alvarez football

Friday's game
Gilroy (1-2) at Alvarez (0-3), 7:30 p.m.
Coming off a 13-0 campaign, including a Central Coast Section Division V title, the Mustangs have struggled this year, having been outscored 119-28.
The first half has been a problem for Alvarez, having been outscored 48-13. As a result, it has been forced to play from behind all season with an offense fighting for an identity.
Neither team has shown to be a threat throwing the ball. In fact, Gilroy didn't complete a pass in its first two games -- one of which it won.
Brandan Doyle has produced all four of the Mustangs touchdowns this year -- all on the ground. The defense did force four turnovers in their lone win.
An argument can be made that Alvarez is perhaps a play or two away from having two wins instead of being winless, with its last two losses being by a touchdown or less.
The Eagles defense has allowed just one touchdown in the second half in their last two games. There are playmakers on defense.
Alvarez has had two weeks to iron out some of its offensive deficiencies in gearing up for its Gabilan Division opener.
Gilroy was just 1-5 in its last and only appearance in the Gabilan Division in 2012. That win came against Alvarez.
