Greenfield-King City football

Friday's game
Greenfield (3-6) at King City (5-4), 7:30 p.m.
While the Bruins are coming off their biggest win of the year, King City is dealing with its worst loss of the season.
Not only did the Mustangs see their shot at the programs first league title in 32 years vanish in a 59-12 pounding by Carmel, but a chance at the playoffs becomes a long shot.
Any thoughts of at least petitioning for the postseason makes this a must win for King City, who has beaten the Bruins six straight times.
There is more incentive for Greenfield than just playing the role of spoiler. This will be the final game for head coach Ryan Bravo, who is stepping down at the conclusion of the season.
And quarterback Andy Hernandez is trying to become the first Greenfield player to rush and pass for over 1,000 yards in a season.
Hernandez put together arguably the best single-game rushing performance in county history last week with a school record 401-yard, seven touchdown effort in a 50-48 win over Soquel.
Hernandez averaged over 10 yards each time he touched the ball, with three touchdowns of 35 yards or longer. As a team, the Bruins rushed for 531 yards.
Last week King City gave up 520 yards in total offense, including 320 on the ground. It had given up just 68 points in five previous league games.
Six turnovers contributed to the loss. In two league losses this fall, the Mustangs have turned the ball over 10 times.

I know you have an obligation to your readers to remain optimistic regarding things like play-off possibilities...BUT with just 3 possible at-large invitations for the two non-Open play-off divisions there is virtually no hope for King City to make the play-offs. Among the 5 B leagues and 3 C leagues in CCS there are 13 teams who qualify for Divisions IV and V by way of the automatic qualifier. With 16 teams in the DIV/V play-offs there are only 3 at-large openings. Looking at the CCS formula for play-off "power" points, it appears King City will end up with 18.0 points assuming they beat Greenfield. 18.0 points will not qualifiy. In fact the current thinking is that it is going to take 21.5 points to be an at-large team.

Carmel with 19.5 points (assuming a victory over PG plus a league or co-league championship by Willow Glen) will need Carlmont to lose to Sequoia (Sequoia a big underdog) and then win a coin flip with Carlmont to gain the last at-large slot.
