Wednesday's matches
All matches start at 7 p.m.
Division IV
No. 4 King City (24-3) at No. 13 Gunderson (18-9)
It's great that a league champion ensures a home match in the playoffs. But I have never seen a top four seed have to travel in the first round.
The Mustangs have put together arguably their best season in a decade. Which says a lot, considering they have missed the playoffs just once in 37 years.
Junior hitter Grace Shepherd has put up MVP type numbers all season at the net with the aid of setter Megan Flores, compiling 368 kills.
The Grizzlies won the Blossom Valley West Division, but were just 5-8 outside league play. Three players have over 100 kills, including 5-foot-8 Karina Lucero, who has 268.
Division IV
No. 11 Terra Nova (13-13) at No. 6 Carmel (22-9)
The Padres have won six straight opening round playoff matches, falling last fall in the quarterfinals to eventual CCS champion Monte Vista in five sets.
Soana Laulotu has been a menace at the net all year for opponents with 254 kills, getting sets from Claire Bishop and Emma Crabbe. Madi Lombardi has over 200 digs on the season for Carmel.
Terra Nova was just 4-10 in the Peninsula Bay Division. But all eight teams from that league made the postseason, including 0-14 Half Moon Bay.
The Tigers have knocked MTAL rival King City out of the postseason in each of the last two years in the first round.
Division IV
No. 14 Pacific Grove (11-9) at No. 3 Harbor (17-11)
The Breakers are in the postseason for the first time in 10 years, posting their first winning season in a decade.
Setter Beckett Sebok ignites an attack that includes Rhapsody Shaoul, Mary Brebing and McKenna Riddleberger.
Harbor shared the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League title with Aptos at 12-2. The Pirates run a two set offense with Maggie Davis leading the assault at the net.
This is the fourth straight year Harbor has faced a team from the MTAL in the first round of the DIV playoffs, going 1-3.
Division IV
No. 8 Mercy-Burlingame (19-13) at No. 9 Seaside (22-6)
On the heels of the programs first ever undefeated league season, the Spartans will put the ball into the hands of Cecilia Reyes, who has compiled 599 assists this year.
Mercy was fourth this year in the West Bay Foothill Division behind CCS powers Menlo, Scared Heart Prep and Notre Dame of Belmont.
The Spartans will come at you with four hitters at the net, including Jocelyn Hernandez, Marianne Tuazon, Sydney Johnson and Jordan Olivares.
Kyana Aledo has been as dominate in the back row as any player in the area, and will make it tough on the Crusaders getting the ball to fall to the floor.
Division I
No. 11 North Salinas (17-12) at No. 6 Los Gatos (19-12)
The Vikings are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2011, closing the year with five straight wins to finish in second in the Pacific Division.
Teresa Ochoa has put together a magical season for North Salinas with 270 kills. Down the stretch, the 5-foot-10 three year starter averaged 17 kills a match.
The Vikings have been a solid serving team with Brooke Siaz compiling 30 aces this fall, to go along with 75 kills.
Los Gatos was 6-6 in the Santa Clara Valley De Anza Division this fall, but did post wins this year over Christopher and Soquel, both of which are in the postseason.
Division I
No. 9 Alvarez (16-15) at No. 8 Cupertino (19-7)
A strong finish by the Eagles catapulted them back into the playoffs for the second straight year.
Not only is Alvarez looking for its first postseason win, but it has never won a set, having been swept in two previous appearances.
Julia Adams is a big season the Eagles are in the playoffs, along with Aaliyah Foster. Alvarez closed the season with the programs first ever win over playoff bound Christopher.
The Pioneers are lead by 5-foot-11 freshman Sahitya Krishnamurthy, who has 170 kills this season, while sophomore Yooni Park has nearly 300 digs.
Division V
No. 10 York (14-2) at No. 7 Thomas More (20-8)
The Falcons are in the postseason for the first time in school history after capturing their first Coastal Athletic League title with an undefeated league season.
Setter Katie Calciano has been the catalyst behind the York attack all season while Jesslyn deAnda might be the MVP of the league, leading the team in kills and digs.
Help has come from Emily Patz at the net and serving line for the Falcons, who are riding a 12-game winning streak..
The Knights were 14-0 in the Private School South Division. Sophomore Katie Blackwell has 165 kills and 212 digs.
| *Note: Salinas has a bye in Division I, Monterey has a bye in Division III and Notre Dame and Santa Catalina have byes in Division V. All won't play until Saturday. | |
