Monterey-Marina football

Friday's game
Monterey (0-3) vs. Marina (1-1) at MPC, 7:30 p.m.
The inability to stop the run has crippled the Toreadores in their first three games, having allowed nearly 900 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.
After playing so well in the first quarter of its first two games, Monterey found itself staring at a 14-point deficit in the first eight minutes last week in a loss to Sobrato.
The Toreadores are also looking to snap a 14-game road losing streak away from campus that dates back to 2014.
A confidence building season opening win for Marina came with a price as tailback Fermin Gabot was injured and did not play last week in a loss to North County. His status remains uncertain.
The Mariners are a more effective team when they can grind the ball and chew up the clock behind offensive lineman Kefu Leander.
More touches for Azjani McGill might be on the menu for the Dores. Arguably the fastest player in the county, the sophomore tailback has touchdowns of 83 and 70 yards this fall.
Monterey has scored four touchdowns this year and McGill has three of them. Keep an eye on kicker Lara Martinez-Alexis, who has kicked a 60-yarder in practice.
