Pacific Grove-Gonzales football

Friday's game
Pacific Grove (2-3) at Gonzales (0-5), 7:30 p.m.
A mental challenge awaits the Breakers this week after squandering a 14-point lead at home last week in a loss to Stevenson.
Perhaps the road is a better place for the reigning two-time Mission Trail Athletic League champions to refocus, as Pacific Grove has won 11 straight league road games.
Quarterback Noah Cryns has rushed for six touchdowns and tossed six touchdown passes for Pacific Grove in four games. Nick Coppla has caught five touchdowns, rushed for two and thrown one.
After allowing 50 plus points a game in three non-league losses, the Spartans have been competitive in the MTAL, battling defending champ Soledad evenly for a half, and falling by three to Greenfield.
Injuries have depleted a team already thin in numbers with receiver Jose Espinosa being forced to play quarterback.
Espinosa has thrown for 486 yards and five touchdowns in three games for Gonzales, while taking over the team lead in rushing with 145 yards.
Jesus Mendoza is averaging over 20 yards a catch since Espinosa took over as the quarterback. The Spartans have been horrific in the third quarter, outscored 59-7.
