Friday's game
Salinas (0-1) at Pioneer (0-1), 7:30 p.m.
After being outscored 209-13 in their first four games last fall - including a 48-0 loss to Salinas - the Mustangs rebounded and went 4-1 down the stretch to make the playoffs.
Pioneer struggled in its opener, falling 35-7 to Los Gatos, while five turnovers crippled Salinas in a 21-14 loss to Aptos.
The Cowboys used two quarterbacks last week. Will it settle on one this week? Richie Cerda rushed for 149 yards -- the first Salinas running back to top 100 yards in 16 games.
Of the 17 completions Salinas quarterbacks had last week, seven went to Jeff Weimer. Yet, for just the third time in 20 games, the Cowboys didn't have a touchdown pass.
Defensively, Salinas looked in mid-season form with four sacks, two from Cooper Smith. It limited the reigning three-time CCS champion Mariners to 55 plays.
Dating back to last year, the Cowboys have dropped three straight games at 'The Pit', but are 3-1 in their last four road games.
