Marina-Seaside football

Friday's game
Marina (0-0) at Seaside (1-0), 7:30 p.m.
Defensively Seaside was on the field for 77 plays last week. It gave up 17 first downs. Did we forget to mention it recorded three turnovers, turning a Daniel Sayre 81-yard interception into a pick six.
Now can the offense shake off the enormous amount of mental mistakes that saw the Spartans record nearly as many penalty yards as offensive yards?
No one is debating the talent level on the Spartans roster. Remaining disciplined in their assignments is critical to unleash this potentially dangerous attack.
Marina needed the extra week to get back to full strength after an assortment of minor injuries forced head coach Vernon Calhoun to call one practice short two weeks ago.
Now in their seventh season, the Mariners have never won a season opener. They've also never had a system in place for two straight years -- until this fall behind quarterback Will Leander.
Anchored by all-league linebacker Angel Guevara, the Mariners defense will have to guard against the Spartans ground game, led by returning 1,000 yard rusher Keishawn Robinson.
The flashy tailback was held to just 38 yards last week. But he added another 38 as a receiver and produced both of Seaside's offensive touchdowns.
