Footballs will be flying in the sky Saturday as 16 teams from up and down California take part in the annual Carmel 7-on-7 Passing Tournament at Carmel Middle School.
As many as five 30 minute games will go on simultaneously, kicking off at 8 a.m., as teams look to sharpen their passing attack before the official start of high school practice in two weeks.
While the tournament isn't an indicator of what will unfold in the fall, it does enable teams breaking in new quarterbacks simulated type game situations -- minus the hitting.
Among the local teams taking part include Carmel, King City, Monterey, Marina, Salinas, Gonzales and Stevenson, while Seaside will compete today in a five-team scrimmage.
Reigning three-time CCS champion Aptos is bringing two teams, as is Milpitas and Central Section power Mendota, who was highlighted on ESPN two years ago.
Also scheduled to take part are Half Moon Bay, Piedmont Hills and Pajaro Valley, while a southern flavor will include San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria.
