Carmel-Gunderson baseball

Central Coast Section Division II
Saturday's game
No. 1 Carmel (20-7) vs. No. 8 Gunderson (24-3) at Hartnell College, 2 p.m.
Don't overlook the Grizzlies, who won the West Valley Division with a 20-1 record, and knocked off Monte Vista 8-7 on Wednesday.
Since starting the season 0-3, the Mission Trail Athletic League champions have gone 20-4. Two of those losses were by one run.
Carmel, who fell in the Division II finals last year, has one of the more potent lineups in the playoffs, as evident by eight of the nine starters getting at least one hit against St. Lawrence.
Carter Hayes has been a machine at the plate with 45 hits and 35 runs batted in over 27 games. Cody Clark and Trent Somerville have swung hot bats of late.
The Padres pitching staff has allowed just two earned runs in their last four outings. Dylan Hoput is expected to get the start today.
Gunderson is hitting .383 as a team this season with sophomore Robert Ruiz hitting .500. Matthew Atencio sports a 7-1 record with a 2.34 earned run average.
