You shouldn't be surprised that the Eagles went on the road and knocked off the No. 6 seed in the opening round of the CCS Division I playoffs.
If anything, Alvarez being seeded No. 11 was a surprise.
Granted, the 8-6-4 overall record isn't impressive. Yet, Alvarez plays in the Gabilan Division, which includes CCS powers Alisal and Watsonville.
In fact, the Eagles have the distinction of having beaten Watsonville earlier this month.
No comes No. 3 seed Los Altos, who sports a 15-1-4 record, whose only loss was a 1-0 decision to Santa Clara back on December 10 in a tournament.
Los Altos is unbeaten at home this year, having won the SCVAL El Camino Division.
Junior sniper Ricardo Soza has been named to the all-league team three straight years for Alvarez, anchoring an offense that generates opportunities off its tenacious defense.
The Eagles defense has held 12 teams to one goal or less this year. Los Altos, also named the Eagles, has shutout 12 teams.
A common opponent is Salinas, who Los Altos beat 3-0 in its only meeting. Alvarez beat Salinas 3-1 on two separate occasions.
