Friday's game
Monterey (1-6) at Monte Vista (5-1), 7:30 p.m.
For the first time in 12 years, the Toreadores will not have a winning season. Pride becomes a factor for a program that has dropped five straight.
Monte Vista quieted a lot of doubters last week, holding a lead over defending Gabilan Division co-champion Palma until 1:55 left in the game.
Avoiding a letdown will likely be a subject of conversation this week for the Mustangs, whose streak of eight straight regular season wins came to an end.
A bright spot in a somber season for Monterey has been the effort of Akili Jones, who is 58 yards shy of his third straight 1,000 yard rushing season.
The Mustangs, who are 15-4 in the last two years, gave up 216 yards on the ground last week -- to one player.
A banged up Monterey squad gave up as many points (68) last week as Monte Vista has allowed all season.
