Friday's game
Marina (2-4) at Soledad (4-2), 7:30 p.m.
Defense is dictating the tempo for Soledad, as it hasn't allowed an offensive touchdown in the first half in its four wins -- no offensive touchdowns in two of those games period.
In fact the Aztecs defense, anchored by Robert Lopez and Andrew Hernandez, has allowed just 14 points all year in the first half.
A search for someone other than quarterback Eric Martinez to effectively run the ball may be over after Emmanuel Ortega earned a few more carries following a career high 145 yard effort last week.
In both of Soledad's losses this fall, it has failed to produce a point on offense. It might be noted that its two setbacks have come from teams a combined 10-2 this season.
Since erupting for a school record 57 points three weeks ago, the Mariners have been outscored 139-46 in their last three games.
Getting EJ Jennings untrack would be a good starting point for Marina, who after opening the year with five straight home games, closes with three of its final four on the road.
