Football Tour XV (Seaside)

Seaside (1-9, 1-5)
The Spartans have suffered just two losing seasons in the last 13 years. Each time they bounced back and won a league title the following season.
The cupboard was bare last season as Seaside simply wore down in the Gabilan Division. Its offense was AWOL, scoring just 40 points in nine losses.
Quarterback was an issue as the team went through four of them. Coach Al Avila believes there will be stability at the position this year with the return of Jesse Morales.
"He’s improved a lot,'' Avila said. "We’re asking him to manage the game. I do feel a lot better than last year about our situation.’’
Yet, what's critical in the resurgence of the Spartans program is rediscovering the ground game. The team has not effectively run the ball in four years. Keyshawn Robinson could change that.
The offensive line is massive, anchored by 350-pound guard Tui Tulau.
The ability to grind the ball and chew up the clock will give a physical and punishing defense -- that is anchored by linebacker Fernando Avila -- more rest on the sidelines.
That could be lethal in the Pacific Division, which is as balanced as any league in the section.
A key for Seaside is depth and youth. There is a core of sophomores who were not brought up to watch.
The Spartans are the only program in Monterey County to have two Central Coast Section titles in the last decade.
