Football Tour XIV (Monterey)

Monterey (8-3, 4-2)
Overhauling an offense five weeks before the start of practice seems like a risk. Especially since the program has made five straight playoff appearances, averaging eight plus wins a year.
Then again, this is a Toreadore program that spent the off-season in limbo. Hiring a new head coach proved to be a tall order after its original hire had a change of heart in June.
Yet, Monterey landed on its feet when former Wilcox coach Daniel Brown took the job in late June. Brown has taken three different programs in the CCS to the postseason.
Brown, who played under former Packers and Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren when he was at Oak Grove, has a vision of throwing the ball.
The Toreadores have never had a reputation for airing it out.
And with Akili Jones and his 2,500 plus rushing yards over the last two years back at tailback, an argument can be made that Monterey should continue to pound the ball.
And it will -- to a point.
Yet, if Monterey is to take that next step, it needs to be able to effectively throw the ball in critical moments. So who will quarterback this team?
Because there are targets, starting with tight end Matthew Wright, who had a leaping game winning catch last year against eventual CCS Division I champion San Benito.
You have to wonder if the lack of depth in numbers catches up with Monterey. While it outscored the opposition 145-35 in the second quarter, it was outscored 78-56 in the fourth quarter.
Six players could be going both ways this fall on a roster that will hover around 30 players.
