Monterey-Hillsdale baseball

Central Coast Section Division III
Quarterfinals
Saturday at Monterey Peninsula College, 2 p.m.
No. 8 Monterey (16-12) vs. No. 1 Hillsdale (27-2)
Champions of the Peninsula Ocean Division, the Fighting Knights set a new school record this year with 23 straight wins.
As a team, Hillsdale compiled a 1.73 earned run average. Monterey has struggled to score runs all season. In fact, all three runs in its playoff opener were unearned.
The Toreadores, who are making their 25th straight playoff appearance, have won seven of their last eight games.
Nick Russo will likely get the start for Monterey. Russo is 4-2 this year as a starter, with both losses coming from Christopher.
David Gugale came into the postseason with seven hits in his last 11 trips to the plate, leading the team in hits, doubles and runs batted in.
Derek Giacalone, who was mired in a 1-12 slump, had two of  Monterey's four hits in its 3-2, 10 inning win over Pacific Grove, scoring the winning run
