The trials created a little more suspense going into tonight's track and field boys finals at Gilroy.
Reigning three-time league champion Palma had a thrower fail to get a mark, and lost yet another sprinter to an injury.
Arguably two of the fastest sprinters in the league are now gone. That's potentially 18 points lost for the Chieftains, who fell earlier this year in a dual to unbeaten San Benito.
That being said, Palma still has two of the fastest marks in the 100 going into the finals. And it will likely produce 10 or more points in eight other events.
Its weaknesses, however, are San Benito's strengths.
There are four events where the Balers could outscore Palma 41-1.
Because five other teams are involved, that could be to the Chieftains advantage.
One event that could provide swing points is the 300 intermediate hurdles.
The bottom line is neither team can afford a false start, dropped baton or a foul in the field. It will be that close. I'm not sure Palma wants this meet to come down to the 1,600 relay.
