Head coach Jeff Carnazzo was worried about rust from a bye week.
What rust?
The Chieftains went out and produced a season high 55 points while shutting out North Salinas -- the defense's second straight shutout.
I think it's fair to compare this year's Palma defense to the CCS title teams of 2001 and 2002, which allowed 122 and 120 points respectively in 13 games.
The Chieftains have given up just 32 points all year. The next closest team is Pacific Grove, which has allowed 72 points in six games.
Palma's defense has not allowed a point in the second quarter all fall while its offense has produced 96.
The road will get a little more difficult with two teams that are a combined 12-2 still on the schedule as well as Salinas, who is 3-0 in the Gabilan.
But this is a defense that shutout WCAL power St. Francis in the first half earlier this year.
In other words, it's not a fluke.
