Monterey football

The Toreadores wanted to get back to Monterey football. By that, I'm guessing head coach Tom Newton wanted to see more out of his running game.
 Presto.
Akili Jones ran like Monterey had hoped he would all season.
The junior tailback rushed for a career high and county best 305 yards -- most of it in the first half -- in the Toreadores win over North Salinas.
Rediscovering the running game only heightens the passing game. And it keeps the defense off the field longer, keeping them fresh later in the game.
Equally importantly, the Toreadores trimmed the mental mistakes in improving to 7-1 on the season.
After seven straight games of seeing its point production drop, Monterey erupted for 50 points.
Of course, how the Toreadores will be graded and judged will come this Friday when they host  Palma at MPC.
