Salinas-Carmel football

Saturday's game
Salinas (0-1) at Carmel (0-1), 2:30 p.m.
It's been 15 years since both teams started the year with a loss. Last week marked the first time since 2001 that Carmel failed to score in the second half.
The health of the Padres is a concern. Quarterback Connor Marden was bothered by a sore ankle last week in the second half while receiver William Kehoe's hamstring made him a none factor.
Perhaps we will see more of sophomore running back Covossay Windham, who chalked up over 100 yards last week for the Padres.
Salinas is still implementing a new offensive system. Encouraging signs were evident in the second half of last week's 21-14 loss to Aptos.
The Padres struggled in stopping the run last week. Salinas has traditionally been a run-first offense. Last week Bruce Leighton rushed for 144 yards.
Expect Carmel to have a little more fire, playing its first game on its new synthetic field. Adrenaline, though, only lasts so long. Plus that turf will make it feel about 10 degrees warmer.
