The run for the national championship begins in about three hours for the nationally ranked Otters softball team, who hosts Western Oregon today at 2:30 p.m.
The CCAA champion Otters are hosting the Super West Regionals for the second time in their nine-year history. In 2012, CSUMB went 2-2 in the double elimination tournament.
One win shy of tying the single season school record for wins with 46, the Otters face a Western Oregon squad that was 33-21 this spring, going 5-1 down the stretch.
Western Oregon was 3-5 against teams from the CCAA this spring, with four of those losses coming from UC San Diego in the season opener.
This is a team with some power, hitting 35 homers. Amanda Evola won the triple crown for Western Oregon, leading the team in hitting, home runs and RBI.
The Otters are anchored by CCAA Player of the Year Cori Reinhardt, who is 19-6 with a 1.83 earned run average, while hitting just under .350.
Teammate Lindsey Clarkson posted a 24-3 record with a 1.76 ERA. Bianca Noriega led the Otters in home runs (4), runs batted in (48) and hitting (.449).
