A prelim to the Central Coast Section Track and Field finals in five weeks unfolded favorably for a handful of local athletes Friday at the Top Eight Meet at San Jose City College.
Three individuals took home titles, including Santa Catalina freshman Mikayla Revera, who was a double event winner, capturing the 400 in a career best of 56.50, and coming back to win the 200 in 25.58.Monterey distance ace James Welsh won the 1,600 in a season best 4:19.00, while Chase Pacheco of Palma captured the long jump in 21-9, well off his CCS leading mark of 23-6 1/2.
Mario Gonzales set two personal records for North Salinas, placing second in the discus (167-4) and third in the shot (52-8). Palma’s Jake Gavin was fourth in the shot at 49-6 1/2.
Pacheco also finished third in the 100 meters in a career best 11.01 and second in the high jump at 6-4, losing the title in a jump off with Santa Cruz’s Dion Shattuck.
The Chieftains scored points in multiple events as Rhett Gonzales was fourth overall in the 110 high hurdles in a season best 14.99 while teammate Devin Hinson was sixth.
Hinson came back later in the evening to clock the second fastest time in Palma school history in the 300 intermediate hurdles, finishing second in 38.92 -- nearly a full second improvement from last year.
Alex Lathos of Notre Dame, a CCS finalist year in the girls 800, finished fourth in a season best 2:17.00.
Santa Cruz won the boys team title with Palma finishing second.
