CCS girls track

I wasn't surprised to see Melanie Hong drop nearly five seconds in the 1,600 last week to vault herself into contention for a spot in the state track meet.
The Carmel distance ace hadn't focused on just one event all season.
That being said, Hong may have to produce another four second improvement at Friday's CCS finals to catapult herself into the state championships.
The field won't go out as slow as it did at last week's trials. Four girls could dip under five minutes. If Hong can hang with the pack, she clearly has the speed for a kick, having run the 300 low hurdles the last three years.

Prediction...
1) Hiltz or Sturges
2) Sturges or Hiltz (how's that for a cop out?)
3) Maxwell (Tsolis just dropped the 1,600, otherwise she is 3rd)
4) Hong
5) Katz (but slighly injured)
6) Croshaw
7) Tischeler
8) Estrada

Knapp, Tsolis, Welsh and Gregory drop, Anderson not 100%. If they were all in this race it would be the deepest field and potentially most exciting girls 1,600 ever.

The good news for Melanie is that the automatic qualifier for state is 5:00.19, which I believe she will hit.

In my humble opinion, unless she is running the steeple chase this weekend, being a 49.1/17.3 hurdler the past 3 years has done nothing for her distance career. Rather it has been an exhibition on how how to mismanage a very sweet and accomodating high school athlete.
