Prep football series XVI

Gilroy

The opening of a second public high school in Gilroy won't have as much effect on the Mustangs football program this fall as the loss of 32 seniors to graduation.
Reason for optimism starts with twins Julius and Romero Travis, both of which reached the state meet last spring in track in the sprints.
In limited touches, Julius averaged 12 yards each time he touched the ball. He had a touchdown run of 85 yards and was on the receiving end of a 75-yard scoring toss.
Romero returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown as a defensive back. He will see more time as a receiver with Julius likely coming out of the backfield in Gilroy's spread attack.
Gilroy's non-league schedule is not as brutal as in the past. That could springboard them to a quick start in what is shaping up to be a balanced Tri-County Athletic League.
