Pacific Grove-Carmel boys hoops

No one said the adoption of the equity league would be perfect.
While it appears the divisions for boys basketball are balanced, losing a rivalry game does sting a little.
Pacific Grove and Carmel will still meet -- Wednesday in both teams' final non-league tune-up at Carmel.
Yet, for the first time in 60 plus years, it is not a league game. And the teams will meet just once instead of twice -- meaning one school loses its biggest gate of the year.
That being said, it's conceivable that the two teams could see each other again in February when the postseason roles around.
Both teams have already qualified for the section playoffs based on their non-league seasons -- for Pacific Grove, that's 28 straight years.
The magnitude of the game still carries a lot of weight on both campus.
In fact, you have to wonder if you really want a game that can be this emotionally draining two days before you open league play?
Than again, neither team showed a desire to schedule creampuffs in the preseason.
Pacific Grove, who opens Mission Division play on Friday, hosting Alvarez, will have played four teams from the Gabilan Division, as well as North Coast Section power Branson.
Of the Breakers five losses this year, four have been by five points or less.
Two of Carmel's setbacks in a 10-3 preseason have come from teams outside the CCS, including Branson of Ross. The Padres open Friday at defending Gabilan Division champion Alisal.
Sophomore J.T. Byrne has been a double-double machine since arriving five weeks late from an extended football season.
Complimenting him on the perimeter have been Kai Lee and Joe Garello.
For the first time in 20 years, the Breakers have three players averaging over 10 points a game, including three-year holdovers Jack Sendell and Josh Cryns.
As much firepower as both teams possess, defense, though, continues to be the cornerstone for both teams.
