King City boys basketball

King City (11-13, 6-7)
Imagine taking the reigns of a program and being greeted by a pair of twins that stand 6-feet-7, and are only juniors.
Size isn't something the Mustangs have had a lot of on the court, which helps explain just two league titles in the last 48 years.
And while being in a new division this season has created expectations, the presence of twins Ashton and Kyras Headley could create headaches as they develop for opponents this fall.
"Both will provide a huge presence on both sides of the floor," said first year King City coach Henry Ventura, who ran the junior varsity program last year.
The pair will certainly give King City an identity in the paint. Coming inside on the twin towers will be a tall task. Offensively, both know how to use the glass when posting up opponents.
While Ventura has inherited just one returning starter from last year's team, senior point guard Angel Trujillo gives him floor leadership.
Brought up last year as a sophomore, Trujillo gives the Mustangs a general on the floor, a distributor at the point while playing tenacious defense.
"He is a great two way player with outstanding leadership," Ventura said. "And he has some playoff experience."
It will not hurt having Luis Briseno and Isaias Gonzales back, two multi-sport athletes getting their legs under them after starting on the football team.
King City closed last season by winning three of its final five to reach the postseason. It was 3-0 in league play last year in games decided by two points or less.
"I believe our biggest strength is our teams overall chemistry," Ventura said. "They're a great group of young men who keep their nose to the grindstone."
Ventura will be filling out the roster with players he coached last season, players that understand his system and share the same vision that he does in taking the program to another level.
"We don't expect anything and are willing to work for everything," Ventura said.
The Mustangs went 4-1 last year against Gonzales, Greenfield and Oakwood, three teams that have joined them in the Santa Lucia Division along with Marina and Watsonville.
"We look forward to competing with every team in our division," Ventura said.
