Mt. Pleasant-Carmel football

Central Coast Section Division V
Saturday's game
No. 8 Mt. Pleasant (6-4) at No. 1 Carmel (10-0), 1 p.m.
What creates some intrigue about this game is former Soledad football coach Frankie Berlanga is the defensive coordinator for Mt. Pleasant.
The significance in that is Berlanga is the only coach from the old Mission Trail Athletic League to have beaten Carmel twice in the last 10 years.
Does it mean anything? It might. Particularly if Carmel comes in with a slight letdown, knowing it's playing the last seeded team in the postseason.
The Cardinals do have momentum, having won five consecutive games in capturing the West Valley League, averaging nearly 40 points a game during the streak.
Mt. Pleasant has rushed for nearly 2,500 yards as a team, with tailback Noah Cruz rushing for 1,475 yards and 18 touchdowns. Quarterback Ethan Hernandez has thrown for 1,175 yards.
As a team, Carmel has thrown 31 touchdown passes this year, with Kai Lee having tossed 26 of them to five different receivers, including Rashaan Ward, who leads the team with eight touchdowns.
Dakota Mornhinweg has rushed for over 1,000 yards for the Mission Division champion Padres and has either caught or rushed for 18 touchdowns this fall.
Yet, defense is what has propelled the Padres to new heights this fall, as it has allowed just 79 points while posting four shutouts.
Behind Robert Brown, Tristan McCallister and Zach DeZee, the Padres defense has not allowed a point in the third quarter.
