Monte Vista-Monterey football

Central Coast Section Division V
Friday's game
No. 7 Monte Vista (5-5) vs. No. 2 Monterey (9-1) at MPC, 7 p.m.
Because the last two regular season games were blowouts, the Toreadores new look offense hasn't really taken shape or been tested under pressure.
New quarterback Josh Elmore has run the offense efficiently for Monterey, who has outscored its last two opponents 87-6 to complete an undefeated Cypress Division campaign.
Monte Vista was winless outside the Mission Division, 5-1 in it. All five of its losses this year were to teams in the postseason.
The last time the Mustangs were in the lower divisions for the playoffs, they reached the Division IV finals in 2014. Their last two trips in 2015 and 2016 were a part of the Open Division III format.
The Mustangs run a Wing-T attack, relying on their physical presence in the trenches to wear teams down.
Tim Byrd is 29 yards shy of 1,000 rushing yards on the season for Monterey. He has rushed for 17 touchdowns. Hendrick Lusk has a team high 20 catches.
While the Toreadores offense has had its moment, the defense has been a mark of stability all year,  allowing just 36 points in the Cypress Division.
Anchored by Janias Thomas and Javier Espinal-Perez, the defense has helped create short fields for the offense by recording 15 turnovers this year.
Special teams have also come up big for Monterey, who has two blocked punts for scores, as well as a kickoff and a punt return for touchdowns.
It also has one of the top kickers in the area in Tony Barragan, who hasn't missed an extra point, and has a game winning field goal to his credit.
