Monterey-Santa Cruz football

Friday's game
Monterey (8-1) at Santa Cruz (2-7), 7:30 p.m.
Owners of no worse than a share of the Cypress Division title, the Toreadores have steamed rolled through the division, outscoring opponents 159-30.
Twice a swarming Monterey defense has posted shutouts while its special teams has accounted for a pair of scores.
Inserting sophomore quarterback Josh Elmore was an intriguing decision this late in the season. Yet, the JV call-up was sharp in his debut, providing another option behind center.
Moving 6-foot-4 Evans Charles to receiver gives the Toreadores a physical player with good hands that can out-leap any defender. Hendrick Lusk has caught a team high 20 passes.
Monterey's offense still revolves around tailback Tim Byrd, who needs 160 yards to go over 1,000 for the season. Byrd has 15 rushing touchdowns -- five in the last two games.
Last week Santa Cruz couldn't stop the run in spotting Pacific Grove 30 points. It has allowed over 2,000 rushing yards this fall.
The Cardinals have struggled offensively all season, having been outscored 59-0 in their seven losses in the first quarter.
