Riordan-Monterey boys hoops

Central Coast Section Division III Finals
Saturday's game
No. 2 Riordan (15-11) vs. No 4. Monterey (19-7) at Independence High, San Jose, 7 p.m.
You can make the argument that beating Riordan in the quarterfinals last year got the piano off the Toreadores back in the postseason, and eventually its first section title.
Prior to that, Monterey had dropped 12 straight quarterfinal games in the postseason, with its last win coming in 1990.
The defending champions are back with thoughts on repeating the feat after using a big second half for the second straight game to knock off top seed Sacred Heart Cathedral on Wednesday.
Experience counts in the postseason and Monterey has a bundle of it with its junior fab four of Evans Charles, Tahjae Ordonio, Mohammed Adam and Mohanid Adam.
The foursome, all members of last year's title team, are all averaging over 12 points a game this year for Monterey, stepping in the postseason.
The Crusaders were just 4-10 in the West Catholic Athletic League, but 14-1 outside league. Sound familiar? Scared Heart Cathedral had a nearly identical mark.
Riordan is 4-0 on natural sites this season while Monterey is 5-3.
What Monterey coach Greg Daniels would like see change is a better start. While it dug itself out of an 11-point first half deficit on Wednesday, it's not ideal when chasing a title.
